Alberto Mendes

Alberto Mendes, known by many as “Dotor,” passed away peacefully on May 11, 2026, at the age of 95. Born on May 6, 1931, in Fogo, Cabo Verde, Alberto lived a long life filled with love, laughter, and devotion to his family and community.

He took great pride in his years as a farmer. He found purpose and joy in caring for the land and providing for his family and community. Alberto’s compassion was perhaps most evident in the care he gave to others. When his sister fell ill with leprosy, he selflessly cared for her with unwavering love and dignity, embodying the true meaning of family and sacrifice.

To his family, he was the peace in the chaos. A steady, calming presence whose love could always be felt. He had a gift for making people laugh, always ready with a joke, a warm smile, or a playful story. With every story he told, he painted vivid memories that left a lasting impression. He loved to dance and listen to the soulful sounds of morna music, which always kept him close to his Cape Verdean roots.

Although Alberto never had children of his own, he naturally stepped into a parental role. His guidance, wisdom, and unconditional love touched generations of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who cherished him deeply.

He is survived by his loving sisters, Felismina Mendes and Ana Mendes.

He was predeceased by his siblings Andelino Mendes, Andelina Mendes, Itelvina Mendes, Miguel Mendes, and Nidia Mendes.

Alberto also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews: Antonio Rodrigues, Angelina Rodrigues, Lucinda Cataldo, Maria Rodrigues, Ernestina Cataldo, Fernanda Ramos, Filipe Rodrigues, Manuel Rodrigues, Eugenia Landin, Augustinho Andrade, Maria “Ioinha” Andrade, Maria “Marina” Andrade, Jose Andrade, and Agustinho Andrade. He was predeceased by his nephew Antonio Andrade.

He was adored by countless great-nieces and great-nephews that were touched by his love and wisdom.

Alberto “Dotor” Mendes will be remembered for his gentle heart, his strength, his humor, and his beautiful spirit. He will forever be cherished.

May he rest in eternal peace.
