It is with profound sadness that we share the news of our mother Alice "Betty" Elizabeth (Saraiva) Baker's passing on February 28, 2026. She was the cornerstone of our family and a source of endless love and strength.
Betty was predeceased by her beloved husband, Kennth A. Baker, Sr., who proudly served as Deputy Chief of The Whitman Fire Dept. prior to his passing in 2005.
After graduating from Brockton High School, she began her professional career as an LPN, working at Mass Hospital School in Canton, where her dedication to caring for children began. Her calling to care did not end there; she went on to work in a nursing home in Brockton and worked for the Brockton VNA, and also driving school buses for First Student in Brockton. Her true passion was becoming a foster parent and working with the Department of Children and Families, opening her home to more than 70 children. Betty and her husband were called upon to accept placements with a moments notice and never hesitated for a moment to love and care for children in need and committed fully to each child, whether they were part of their family for a day, a week, a month or a lifetime. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts owes a great debt to Betty Baker. Fostering families across the nation could certainly take a page from her loving example of selfless giving to the most vulnerable of children. Her fostering parenting came to an abrupt halt when she suffered a massive heart attack and was no longer able to continue doing what she loved. While being a foster parent she also opened an at home day care, "Lots of Love Day Care.” Caring for others was not simply something she did- it was who she was. Whether you were family by blood or a child in need of a soft place to land, she welcomed you in and made sure you felt protected.
Betty loved spending time with family, especially her children and grandchildren. She loved camping, Fryeburg fair, driving, especially fast cars! Her other favorite passion was cooking, especially Portuguese Sweet Bread and pizza.
She leaves behind a legacy defined by fierce love, strength and an unwavering devotion to others.
Betty was the mother of Ann-Marie (Baker) Sloan, Kenneth A. Baker Jr. and his wife Shannon, Alicia (Baker) Murray and her husband Todd, Jason Baker and his wife Melissa, Amanda Candace (Baker/Egan) Andrews, and Leah Baker.
Loving nana to Alexah Sloan, Miah, Kenny and Tyler Baker, Liam and Shane Murray, and JJ Baker and Taylor Mackey.
Sister of Edward Saraiva and his wife Mary of Brockton, Irene Sabat her husband Mike of Brockton, and the late Gilda Cribben, Michael Saraiva Sr. and Robert Saraiva.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, March 9 , 2026 from 4:00-8:00pm at Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont St. (Rte. 123) Brockton. A Funeral Mass will be at held on Tuesday, March 10th at 10:30am at St. Bridget Church, 455 Plymouth St., Abington. Her burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Brockton.
