Obituary

Anthony G. "Tony" Eonas, 82, of Brockton, passed away on Friday, July 9, 2021 at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He was the husband of Cordelia M. (Murphy) Eonas. Anthony G. Eonas, born in Brockton March 3, 1939 to Greek immigrants, was a lifelong resident and true son of Brockton. A professor at Suffolk University for 50 years, local attorney, public servant, business owner, and volunteer, he proudly dedicated his life to family, education, and his beloved community. Tony, to those that knew him for a day or a lifetime, welcomely embraced all those he came to know under any circumstance with enthusiasm and boundless generosity. Most of all to Tony, everyone was always welcome and an opportunity to help others was an opportunity to be taken. Tony worked at a local leather tannery while in school, and graduated from Brockton High School in 1957, where he lettered in football, playing both ways at center and nose guard because, "that's just what people did back then." He received his bachelor of science degree in engineering from Northeastern University in 1962, where he also played varsity football. He later earned his MBA, also from Northeastern, while working as a professor of marketing at Bentley College. Inspired to learn and help others, Tony attended Suffolk University Law School at night and graduated in 1975. His proudest achievement, Tony taught at the Suffolk University School of Management for 50 years, and served as the Chair of both the Marketing and Business Law and Ethics Departments and served on numerous committees. As a professor, Tony was awarded the Outstanding Professor Award, the Heritage Medallion for outstanding contribution to the University and led students on global seminars, where he taught in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Upon his retirement in 2018, Tony was bestowed the honor of Professor Emeritus, a distinction he wore with tremendous pride until his death. Tony's greatest satisfaction as a teacher was the opportunity to advise and mentor students, to help them through problems big and small, to lend a listening ear with a welcoming smile, and most of all, to instill confidence in them and inspire them to greatness. Tony also practiced law in Brockton for over thirty years with his partners John Whitehouse and John McCoy. In 2015, he was awarded the Chief Justice Alan Hale Career Service Award by the Plymouth County Bar Association. Tony loved to give back to his community. He tirelessly served on the Brockton Zoning Board of Appeals, including Chairman, for over 20 years, on the Brockton Consumer Commission, Mediation Program, and Cable Advisory Commission. An entrepreneurial spirit, Tony also formerly owned several local businesses including Crosby's Supply, Deelins Hardware, and Westside Pizza in Brockton, and Fairbanks Hardware in Bridgewater. Tony's passion was in the outdoors, taking many trips on his Harley Davidson to Laconia, Sturgis, and countless roads in between. An avid hunter, a successful hunt was marked only by a long walk in any type of weather followed by a nap under a low hanging pine tree. Tony loved to read about any subject, was a fantastic cook, travelled the world, and spent a great deal of time in his second hometown, Hinsdale, New Hampshire. His favorite weather was any type of storm, especially rain. Tony died peacefully July 9, 2021 after a short illness during a torrential downpour. He is survived lovingly by his wife of 57 years, Cordelia (Dee Dee) Eonas, sons George Eonas and his children, Anthony, Samantha, and Alex; Russell Eonas and his wife Isabel and their children, Piper and Reid; daughter Nicole Inguanti and her husband Steven, and their children, Ana, Nicholas, and Sophie as well as Tony's sister, Phylis Georgeu of Norwood. Tony is also survived by his brother in law, Lewis Demetroulakos, of Chelmsford and predeceased by Tony's sister, Niki Demetroulakos, formerly of Chelmsford.
