Arlene Nancy (Tinkham) Wood, 86 of Lakeville, passed away after a long illness on March 29, 2022. Arlene was born on June 28, 1935 in New Bedford to Robert S. and Marcelle (Dumonte) Tinkham.
Arlene grew up in New Bedford and attended New Bedford High School. She later pursued a degree in education and attended Southeastern Massachusetts University (now University of Mass. Dartmouth). She lived in Acushnet for more than 30 years. Arlene was a stay-at-home mother while her children were young. Once her children were older, she re-entered the work force working at Harbor Inc. She eventually retired as an office clerk at Southeast Correctional in Bridgewater. Arlene resided in Lakeville for the latter half of her life.
In years past Arlene had enjoyed gardening, bird watching, reading, crafting including quilting and counted cross stich, baking and travelling. She was active in advocating for the rights of fellow residents as president of the tenant association when she resided in the mobile home park and was presented an award at the state house for her advocasy. Arlene was happiest when with her family and her beloved cat Princess.
Arlene is survived by her sister Patricia Bessette of Lakeville, daughters Diane Wood-Bielski and her husband John Bielski of Middleborough, Hilary Wood and her partner Kent McCormack of Lakeville, son Robert Wood and his wife Jocelyn of Wareham, grandchildren Maeghan Bielski, Ian Bielski, Drew Bielski, Jonathan Wood, and Tabitha Wood. Arlene was predeceased by her twin sister Pauline Dupre.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life that will be held on Thursday, April 7, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 169 Belleville Road in New Bedford at 11am. In lieu of flowers the family requests that a donation be made on Arlene's behalf to the Massachusetts Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals.
