Augusto Lopes (103) of Raynham, MA passed away at home on October 24, 2024, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Born Augusto De Nhamina to Guilhermina Goncalves Lopes and Gaudencio Celestino Lopes in the village of Cova Figueira, on the island of Fogo, Cabo Verde, he lived a rich and fulfilling life.

At 19 years of age, in 1939, he met and married the love of his life Ilda Fontes. They loved and adored one another and shared a special connection of God's perfect union for 84 blessed years.

In 1986, seeking new opportunities, Augusto and Ilda immigrated to the United States, settling in Brockton, MA in pursuit of the American dream.

After retirement, Augusto cherished the time spent caring for his grandchildren and traveling to Cape Verde. He was an avid reader and enjoyed collecting books. Augusto was a devoted Catholic who expressed his faith through song, often singing his favorite hymn, "O Deus vos sois o meu Deus." He was also known for cultivating lasting friendships, being peacemaker, and always offered wise and constructive advice. His earthly presence will be missed by all who knew him.

Augusto is survived by 8 children; Joao D.Lopes (Denxo) and wife Rita of Scituate, Guilhermina Gomes (Milu) of Holland, Maria Gomes (Nhay) of West Bridgewater, Edgar Lopes and wife Isabel of Brockton, Maria Cruz ( Idulce) of Raynham, Emanuel Lopes (Neca) and wife Natalia of Bridgewater, Ramiro Lopes (Tutuca) and wife Sandra of Florida, Amarildes Fonseca and husband Terencio of East Providence RI. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren, as well as a nephew, Fernando Fontes, whom he adored as a son.

He is preceded in passing by his wife Ilda Lopes, son Jose Augusto Lopes, grandson John Lopes, sister Judite Lopes Fontes (Julia), nephew Adalberto Fontes, and niece Rute Fontes.

Visitation will be held at the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont Street, Brockton, on Monday, October 28, 2024 from 4 to 8 p.m. His funeral service will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, October 29th at 9 a.m. followed by his funeral mass at St. Edith Stein Church, 71 East Main Street, Brockton at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery, 163 North Cary Street, Brockton, MA.
