Obituary

THE SPIRITED Bernadine Callwood Bernadine Callwood, 77 whom resided in Brockton, passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2020 from Cancer at her home under the care of her family and hospice. She battled cancer for over three years with a positive outlook until the Lord called her home. IN THE END, SHE FOUGHT THE GOOD FIGHT Bernadine Benjamin-Callwood was born on December 26, 1942, on the island of St. Kitts to Adam and Anita Benjamin. Growing up everyone from her hometown called her Mathias. By 1963, Bernadine had two sons that she wanted a better life for and so she migrated to the British Virgin Island of Virgin Gorda to find work. By 1965 she met and married Joshua Joseph Callwood and they then migrated to the British Virgin Island of Tortola in 1968. It was there in Tortola they completed their family which included 8 additional children which brought the family to a total of 13 children between them both. In Tortola, Bernadine was able to settle down and make a life for herself and her family. It was there in Tortola that she grew roots and was able to have something that she could call her own. With her husband being away for long stretches of time for work, she held down the home on her own. She dabbled in many things to ensure that her family was okay and comfortable. She cleaned houses; she ran her own little shop where she sold groceries and snacks from candy to popcorn. She sewed all her kids uniforms for school. She was a really good cook and made sure that there was always something for the kids to eat. Bernadine was always a giving soul. She opened her house to many. Her home was always busy with kids coming and going. She never turned away anyone or any family, she was always there no matter what the circumstances. In the last few years, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and she defied all odds and kept up the fight for 3 plus years. Everyone that she came in contact with thought she was a strong woman and wondered how she did it. She always had a positive outlook on life and never let the negative hold her back. Life brought many challenges but she kept her head up and FOUGHT THE GOOD FIGHT. Bernadine was a loving, compassionate, caring and affectionate woman. In the end, God decided to stop her suffering and called her home. May she rest in peace A memorial gathering will be held in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (Rt.123) Brockton on Thursday, December 10th from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM. ************************* COVID-19 Funeral Home Capacity Restrictions******************** Russell & Pica Funeral Homes Guidelines when attending a funeral wake/service.
