Bertrand H. Wheeler
Bertrand Hall Wheeler, 85, of Brockton, passed away Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. He was the beloved husband of Hilda E. (Millicent) Wheeler.
Born February 5, 1925 in New York, New York, he was the son of the late William R. Wheeler and Anna (Sheffild) Wheeler. Mr. Wheeler was raised in Massachusetts. He was one of ten children. He in turned fathered seven. Five sons, two daughters, and a daughter his heart adopted.
He worked hard his entire life to give his family all they needed and wanted.
Always two jobs, most the time three. He worked at Hunt Spiller, Boston Navy Yard, Hingham Shipyard, Bethlehem Steel, Portsmouth Shipyard, Groton Shipyard and General Dynamics.
He helped build the first Nuclear Missile Carrier "The Long Beach." His seven children accompanied him to the dedication. He also helped to build the "Bainbridge," "Lykes," and "Spear."
He worked on the first automatic welding machine brought into General Dynamics. He taught welding at schools in Quincy, Boston and Dorchester. He was well liked by all and one wanted Bert to adopt him. He replied, "Thank you son, but I already have five sons and believe me, that's all I can handle. However, I am honored that you asked me.".
He started at Hunt Spiller in Dorchester at the age of Eighteen. He ended up at Ackles Steel at the age of Sixty-Two.
While working steady at the Shipyards, he also worked part-time driving taxis for Town Taxi, Checker Taxi and Independent Taxi Company. He also worked for these companies sometimes as full-time, whenever the yards were on strike.
He also worked at Beacon Mattress and the Harold Street Laundry Mat. While at the last two jobs, his most willing and dedicated worker was his 2nd son, Ruby. No matter what time of day or night. He laughingly spoke of this often in later years.
He ended up at Ackles Steel at the age of Sixty-Two. He worked for them for eight years. He retired at age Seventy. Fully retired at age Seventy-Two.
He leaves behind his two sisters, Charlotte and Dorothy; his two brothers, Gilbert and Robert; he also leaves his loving wife, Hilda; his six children, Marlayna, Ruby, Vi, Raymond, Michael, and Stephen; his beloved heart adopted daughter, Nancy; his late son, Bert, Jr. who died at the age of 29; his 12 grandchildren, Duffy, Honey (whom he treasured), Lylah and Kiss who he adored and she returned the favor, Marcus, Alex, Nicky, Natie, Bert, 3rd., Chantal, Louis Charles and Cookie, his five great-grandchildren, Xavia, Ashley, Emily, Danielle and Paisley.
He was a wonderful Husband, a great Father, a loving and caring Grandfather and Great-Grandfather.
He was dearly loved by all. Though we shall miss him greatly and loved him dearly. We all know he has earned his rest. We wish him Godspeed on his way up.
