Brett Gormley, born on March 20, 1980, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at Pat Roche Hospice in Hingham, surrounded by the love of his family and friends, after a courageous and grueling battle with cancer. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and deep devotion to his family, students, and community. Brett was a man who lived fully, loved fiercely, and made a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Brett was the beloved husband of Kara (Lightbourne Wall) Gormley, his partner in life and love. Together, they built a life centered on family, support, and cherished memories. He was a proud and devoted father to his daughters, Amaya and Avery Gormley, and a loving stepfather to Andrew Wall. Being a dad was one of Brett’s greatest joys, and he showed up every day with encouragement, humor, and unconditional love.
He is survived by his mother, Judy (Mcdonald Gormley)Rockett, and stepfather, Fred Rockett; his father, Sean Gormley, and stepmother, Mary Ellen Chaves; and his mother- and father-in-law, Catherine Walsh Collins and Howard Collins. He was a loving brother to Jennifer Tranfaglia (husband Joe Tranfaglia), Kristen Walker (husband Gary Walker), and Aidan Boynton Gormley, and also leaves behind many cherished stepbrothers and stepsisters.
Brett was a proud and caring uncle to his nieces Joy Thompson, Kristiana Thompson, Faith Tranfaglia, and Hannah Tranfaglia, and his nephew, Luke Tranfaglia. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, and lifelong friends who will miss him dearly.
Brett dedicated his life to helping others grow. As a gym teacher in Brockton and Boston, and later as a Health and Physical Education administrator in Falmouth, he had a remarkable gift for connecting with his students—encouraging them, inspiring them to do their best, and ensuring they always felt seen and valued. Whether in the classroom or on the field, where he coached football, basketball, and track, Brett was more than a teacher or coach—he was a mentor, role model, and constant source of support. In addition to his work in education, Brett also had a passion for gardening and landscaping taking pride in working outdoors and creating beautiful, welcoming spaces for others to enjoy.
His commitment to his community was evident through his service on the Brockton School Committee, where he worked tirelessly to make a difference for local families and students.
Brett also knew how to embrace life. He had a deep love for Disney World, a place that brought out his joy and sense of fun. He shared his passion for travel with those closest to him, visiting Bermuda, Iceland, Ireland, and Cape Verde—always returning with stories, laughter, and a renewed appreciation for life.
Those who knew Brett will remember his big heart, his sense of humor, his loyalty, and the way he made people feel like family. He had a gift for bringing people together, lifting others up, and turning ordinary moments into something special.
Just days after celebrating his birthday on March 20th, Brett continued doing what he loved most—spending time with those closest to him, creating memories that will now be cherished forever.
