Obituary

CARLYLE JABEZ LOVELL was born on June 20, 1947 in Barbados, West Indies, to the late William and Galda Lovell. Known as "Carl" to family and friends, he grew up with five siblings in the Venture neighborhood of St. John parish. As a child, Carl was actively involved in helping with the rearing of goats, pigs, sheep, cows, chickens and ducks. He also helped maintain the family vegetable and flower gardens. As a young man, Carl served as an officer in the Barbados Regiment during the late 1960s and the early 1970s. He also taught at the now-defunct Federal High School, the same institution in which he had obtained his secondary school education. In 2000, Carl immigrated to the United States, settling with his family in Boston, Massachusetts. He was employed in retail positions in various companies for many years—among them the 660 Corporation, City Convenience, and Aramark. Carl made many lifelong friendships at work and travelled many times to Ethiopia during his vacations. From his first union, Carl became a proud father when he welcomed his eldest daughter, Lisa, into the world. His marriage to Sheila (née Massiah) Lovell gave him the joy of two more children: his son, Runeko, and youngest daughter, Amanda. To his nieces, nephews and other extended family members, Carlyle was lovingly and respectfully called "Uncle Carl." He was known for his infectious smile and his kind, compassionate spirit. Carl was an excellent cook and a great baker. He was also very musically proficient, having learned to play the piano, the concertina, and the mouth organ. On Wednesday, June 10, 2020, at the age of 72, Carlyle Jabez Lovell passed away peacefully at the Good Samaritan Medical Center, in Brockton, MA, surrounded by his loving family. Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Trevor and Juanita Lovell; his aunts: Cynthia Alleyne-Babb and Esme Alleyne-Cox; his father-in-law and motherin-law, Edwin and Vanelda Massiah; and his brother-in-law, Vernon Massiah. He is survived by his three children: Lisa (Glen) Marshall, Runeko and Amanda Lovell; his former wife of 28 years, Sheila Lovell; his brothers: Orville and Adrian Lovell; his sisters: Joy Lovell and Jessica McCarthy; and his grandson, Joshua Brathwaite. Carl also leaves to mourn their loss, his nieces and nephews: Monique McCarthy Edwards, Treca McCarthy Davis, Virgil McCarthy, Dale Mason, Chenelle Lovell Phillips, Orville Lovell, Jr., JerriLee and Adrienne Lovell; 11 great-nieces and -nephews; his cousins: Stephen, Sherman and Sharon ("Sherri") Cox; his sisters-in-law: Deborah and Eldorna Lovell, Valerie, Cynthia, and Edwina Massiah, Veronica Alleyne, and Margaret Ann Agbonagieva; and his brother-in-law, Edwin Winston Massiah. He will always be remembered by many other relatives: the Alleyne, Glasgow, Goddard, Gall and Massiah families; and friends too numerous to list. Rest in peace, Carl, until we meet again. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 23rd at 10:00AM in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St.,(Rt.123) Brockton. Interment will follow in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
