Obituary

Carolyn Brooke (Oas) Condon, of Bridgewater, MA, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 73 on March 12, 2024, at Accent Hospice in Milton after a courageous battle of more than 2.5 years with pancreatic cancer. On her final day she was with her three children, Caitlin Komm, Mary Cahoon, and Andrew Condon, and with her husband John A. Condon, the former Chief Financial Officer of the City of Brockton, MA. Her husband was at her bedside at her passing.

Born in Chicago, IL on April 11, 1950, she was the daughter of Richard E. Oas and his wife Dorothy E. (Rood) Oas, both now deceased, and the sister of older brother Richard E. Oas, Jr., a retired physician of Manchester, NH. She was known in her early years as Carolyn but as Brooke to her beloved friends and family after her high school years.

The Oas family moved to Summit NJ in her early years, and she attended the public schools of Summit, graduating from Summit High School in 1968. She enrolled in Elmira College in New York, where she managed the college radio station and graduated with a BA in English in June of 1972.

During the four years that she attended Elmira, her father was assigned to Zurich, Switzerland for business. Due to this, she visited Switzerland many times and over those years she made Swiss friends.

In 1972, she began work at an insurance agency in Philadelphia, where she met her future husband, John (Jay), then an officer in the US Navy, when he visited old college friends for a weekend.

After they wed in August of 1973, Brooke and Jay honeymooned on a driving tour of Ireland before returning to Portsmouth, NH for the final year of his Navy years.

In 1974, they moved to Philadelphia, while Jay obtained an MBA from the Wharton School. Brooke supported them with her work at the insurance agency, where she obtained her insurance license and eventually managed the office.

In 1979, she gave birth to her first child Caitlin Patricia in Detroit, MI, where Jay had been transferred from Philadelphia for a business promotion. Subsequently, Jay was transferred back to Philadelphia, where Mary Carolyn was born in 1985. They finally arrived in Brockton, MA, and Andrew Richard was born in 1989.

While her children were young, Brooke concentrated primarily on their care and worked only part time on local town committees. However, in the mid-1990s, after Andrew had entered elementary school in Bridgewater, she began a long association with the Bridgewater Raynham Public Schools, where she was a school secretary and also a Special Education Compliance Clerk. She retired in July of 2021.

She had a lifelong love of nature, radio, music, and literature. To varying degrees her children shared these interests, but they especially shared her passion for learning and reading. Each of them became educators.

Beginning in December of 2019, Brooke and Jay were blessed with the births of grandchildren: first, Alice Ellen Komm, then in March of 2021, twin boys, Levi Colin and John Eoin Cahoon, and finally, in April of 2021, Lillian Caroline Condon. Along with her children, these four grandchildren became the joy of her life. She was utterly enchanted by them and arranged to be with them as often as she could, even during her cancer treatment.

Brooke was a woman of deep loyalty to friends and family. In relationships, she was always willing to be the one to walk the greater distance. This trait inspired deep affection from all who knew her.

Brooke is survived by her husband John Condon; her three children and their spouses: Caitlin Komm and her husband Genna; Mary Cahoon and her husband Seth; Andrew Condon and his wife Victoria; her four grandchildren Alice, Levi, John, and Lilly; her brother Richard Oas and his wife Sue Corby, their children Jessica, Daniel, Clinton, and Emily, and their spouses and children; as well as many, many treasured friends, some of whom are long lasting from her earliest days, and many more of whom are recent, as she was quite easy to love.
