Chester E. Spencer, Jr.
Chester E. "Chetty" Spencer, Jr., of Bradenton, Florida and formerly of Plymouth, Massachusetts. died on July 13, 2009 at the age of 71 after a lengthy illness. He died within hours of the death of his beloved brother William "Billy" Spencer, late of Lady's Island, South Carolina.
Mr. Spencer was born in Boston and was the son of the late Chester E. and Mildred (Roche) Spencer. He was raised in Hull and was a graduate of Hull High School. After graduating from high school, he was a member of the United States Army. He later served in the United States Naval Reserves. Following his military service, Mr. Spencer became a police officer in Hull followed by a twenty-three year career as a patrolman in Plymouth. He retired from the Plymouth Police Department in 1994. He was also the former owner and proprietor of Chetty's Place, a Manomet restaurant.
He is survived by his son Scott W. Spencer of Plymouth and his daughter Cheryl A. Busch of Whitman. He was also the father of the late Linda Spencer and Richard Spencer. He was the proud grandfather of Lindsey M. Busch of Whitman and Shea T. Spencer and Vance C. Spencer, both of Plymouth. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Jeiden and Shaelyn Busch of Whitman. One of twelve children, Mr. Spencer leaves behind his brothers Robert Spencer and his wife Effie of Plymouth and James Spencer of Carver, and his sisters, Shirley Austin of Holbrook, Dorothy Sears of Billerica, Patricia Short, Helen Spencer and Karen Drapeau and her husband Ronnie, all of Bradenton, Florida, and Virginia Finneran and her husband Buddy of Citrus Springs, Florida. He was also the brother of the late John Spencer and Barbara Burr. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and his longtime friend Gloria McNevin.
Mr. Spencer was a member of the John Alden Club in Plymouth, as well as the International Brotherhood of Police Officers. He split his time between Florida and Massachusetts during his recent years, and enjoyed traveling, boating, camping trips, and socializing with his family and many friends. Some of his greatest joys in life were the times he spent with his beloved grandchildren. He also treasured his many longtime friendships which developed over the years in the course of his life and work in Plymouth. His career choice as a police officer fit him perfectly as he could always be counted on to help out others in need. His sense of humor and passion for life will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Funeral Information
A memorial gathering will be held for Mr. Spencer on Saturday, August 1, 2009 in the Russell Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St. (Rt. 123), Brockton from 10:30-11:30AM followed by a Memorial Prayer Service at 11:30AM. Interment will follow in Vine Hills Cemetery, Plymouth.
