Obituary

Daniel P. Murphy, 46, of Easton, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 8, 2023, while recovering from a brief illness. He was the beloved son of Robert and Frances Murphy and brother of Susan (Murphy) Gilmore.

Dan was born in Brockton, Massachusetts, and grew up in Easton. A 1994 graduate of Boston College High School, Dan was a standout on the football and baseball fields. In 1995 he completed a post graduate year at Northfield Mount Hermon School, where again he excelled on the ball field; and was awarded the Sportsmanship Award for all Athletes. Dan was a 1999 graduate of Stonehill College, where he also played varsity baseball. After college, he played single A professional baseball for the Lynn Mad Dogs for one season.

Dan worked in the financial industry for 17 years for Putnam Investments, Bank of America and Morgan Stanley. In 2016, he made the decision to follow his passion into the healthcare field. He went back to school to become an Emergency Medical Technician; and worked as an EMT for Fallon Ambulance Service for 3 years before switching to Brewster Ambulance Service and ultimately becoming a paramedic serving the Brockton community. In 2022, Dan was accepted to Brockton Hospital School of Nursing and just completed his first semester of nursing school in December 2022.

Dan was an avid sports fan and enjoyed following Manchester United, the Red Sox and the Patriots. Those who knew him best, knew he was an enthusiastic Raiders fan in the middle of Patriots Nation. He loved being outdoors and the natural world. He was sometimes known as the Barefoot Runner of Easton. He loved to talk about proper running form and how barefoot was best. We desperately tried to stay away from his feet.

He loved reading and learning; he would tell anyone who would listen about all the amazing things he was learning in nursing school. He loved spending time with all of his extended family, sharing stories, recalling past memories and creating new ones, usually laughing until our sides hurt.

Dan is survived by his parents Robert (Bob) and Frances (Newbauer) Murphy, of Easton as well as his sister Susan (Murphy) Gilmore and her husband Adam, of Lowell. He was an amazing Uncle to their daughter Nora, whom he adored. He is survived by many aunts, cousins and other extended family members.

A funeral mass will be held at Holy Cross Church, 225 Purchase St., Easton on Monday, January 16th at 11AM followed by interment in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Easton. Calling hours in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., Brockton on Sunday, January 15th from 2-5PM.

In lieu of flowers, the Murphy family would appreciate donations to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or a charity of your choice in his name.
