Obituary

Dawna L. Jones of Milton, MA affectionately known as "Dawna", transitioned to be with her Heavenly Father on Saturday, December 17, 2022. Dawna will continue to be known as an amazing human being and phenomenal woman. As a wife, mother, daughter, sister, physician, holistic practitioner, and friend, she embodied a joyful spirit and beautiful soul.

Dawna was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 12, 1959. As a young child she was very intelligent, vibrant, and articulate. At the age of four, her parents moved to Venezuela where she spent some of her formative years and then on to the country of Spain. She became fluent in Spanish and displayed an insatiable appetite for learning. Upon her return to Detroit around the age of seven, Dawna was enrolled into the public school system where she developed and displayed her leadership, her creativity, and her personality.

Dawna gave her life to Christ in her early teens and was very active in Unity (Unity Church). She was someone who was always ahead of the learning curve. Upon her graduation from Henry Ford High School in 1976, she attended Fisk University in Nashville, TN and earned a degree in Biology in 1980. Dawna moved to Boston, MA to attend Tufts University Medical School where she completed her medical degree in 1984. Boston would be the place where she would eventually call home.

After graduation and completion of her residency, Dawna worked in Boston at several hospitals before entering into private practice in the South Shore of Massachusetts. She became very popular as a physician who had excellent bedside manners and a great ability to listen. As an obstetrician/gynecologist she helped to deliver many babies into the world. She was an accomplished doctor recognized by her colleagues as a committed, dedicated, and skilled surgeon.

Dawna's commitment was not only to her work, but to her family. Her first marriage to Milton Kennedy produced their son Marshall Kennedy which allowed her to co-parent alongside Peggy "Serwaa" Pickering along with daughters Myiesha Demery, Naeemah Kennedy, and son Omar Kennedy to create a wonderful and beautiful nurturing blended family unit. Dawna's spirit and perspective created an environment of growth for her children. She gave them exposure to camps, concerts, skiing, and traveling that has allowed them to broaden their horizon and be difference makers in today's society.

Dawna enjoyed medicine, yet wanted to help people with a more natural approach. It was in a season of reflection in about 1998 that she enrolled in homeopathy school and became a Holistic Practitioner. This made her a dual threat as she combined her expertise in Western medicine and her love for Eastern medicine, which created a larger platform to help heal her patients. She spent 15 of the last 20 years in private practice as a holistic healer, committed to giving her patients alternative options for healing.

As a woman of faith, Dawna regularly attended church. She always loved visiting other churches. During a chance visit in November of 1998 to Parkway United Church in Milton, MA she met Geraldo O. Hodge Jr. After an almost 3 year courtship, they got married on October 12, 2002, at the same location and added a daughter Kayla J. Hodge to her family. They had the perfect marriage for each other, partnering in business and supporting each other in their respective ventures. Dawna and Geraldo enjoyed salsa dancing, line dancing, playing golf, conversational date nights, traveling in the US and the Caribbean, late night conversations, masterminding, and spending time with family and friends.

Dawna was everyone's best friend, but what she enjoyed more than anything else was to have fun. She always found ways to bring joy to her life as well as inspiring others to do the same. She transferred that joy to create great relationships with her family, friends, colleagues, patients, and those she would meet. Dawna loved to travel. She would take trips to reconnect with family in California, Detroit, New Jersey and Tennessee. She spent time in Arizona, a place she dreamed of moving to. She traveled with her husband on many trips to the Caribbean.

Yet, one of her favorite places in the world was Martha's Vineyard, MA. A place where Dawna spent time riding bicycles, relaxing on the beach, chilling by the pool, and enjoying amazing sunsets. Dawna loved photography and taking pictures of the beach, sunsets, and fun selfies of herself. She loved listening to new age music, Motown music, playing the guitar, playing golf, and spending time with the relationships that she treasured the most.

She's survived by her husband Geraldo O. Hodge Jr., Sons: Marshall (Kayla) Kennedy, and Omar (Ashley) Kennedy, Myiesha (Shimon) Demery-Warden, Naeemah (Herve Louis) Kennedy, Kayla J. Hodge.
