Obituary

Dolores R. Shanks, 75, of Wareham, passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2020. She was the wife of Walter T. Shanks. Born on October 24, 1944 in Brooklyn, New York, Dolores was the daughter of the late James Stanton and Rita M. Stanton. In addition to her husband, Walter, Dolores is survived by her children, Christine K. Jenkins and her husband Thomas of Cape Cod, Sheila M. Whitaker and her husband John of Bridgewater, Walter J. Curnow and his wife Kerry of East Bridgewater and Amanda C. Hellriegel of Providence, Rhode Island; her grandchildren, Harleigh Jenkins, Hayden Jenkins, Brendan Whitaker, Alison Whitaker, Matthew Whitaker, Meghan Morey, Patrick Morey and Caroline Curnow; and her siblings, James Stanton, Michael Stanton and Rita Hellriegel. She was also the sister of the late Thomas Stanton and Patrick Stanton. Dolores or "Dee" (Grandee to her grandchildren -Aunt Dee to her nieces and nephews) as she was warmly referred to was a wonderful mother, wife, aunt, sister, grandmother, and friend. Her contagious laughter and unfailing support were just two reasons that she would be your first phone call with news, good or bad. Dee was the support system for so many, especially her family which she adored beyond measure. She loved to tell a good story and they all had the recurring theme ...love and pride for her children and grandchildren. She shared a great love with her husband "Bub" and through their story, we all learned the power of unconditional love. Dee and Bub created so many wonderful memories at Thatcher Court where Dee fed, cared for, and entertained countless family and friends. Her "after a night out 2 a.m. breakfast sandwiches" were legendary and she loved to wait up and hear all about the fun times. Upon retirement, Dee relocated with Bub to Wareham and there they found tremendous joy in raising their niece Amanda who did a great job "keeping them young". Dee enjoyed cooking and making holidays special for her family and friends and everyone she met was a lifelong friend. She took tremendous joy in making you your favorite meal. Dee and her best friend Jeannie made summer vacations one long adventure full of hijinks, laughter and lots of singing. They never missed an episode of Big Brother and enjoyed a true life long friendship. Dee really knew how to make a house a home. Her home in East Bridgewater where she raised her family was lovingly furnished with beautiful pieces (many that she redid herself) that truly made the space feel special and rich with memories. Dee was known for her ability to care for others – she was a mom to all! While raising her family she shared her homemaking talents with others and started her own cleaning service company. CSW (named for her children). She was highly sought after as she provided clean, safe homes as well as friendship for her many clients including much needed services to Catholic Charities of Brockton. Dee was particularly happy that she could provide these services to others and still be there when her children were home from school. Her super power was the ability to know and be where she was needed. Dee taught us to laugh at ourselves, make a nice bed, and the importance of a kind word. The love, understanding, forgiveness and compassion she had was not like anyone you ever met. She was a strong and gentle soul and the true definition of a lady. A funeral service will be held in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., Brockton on Monday, February 24, 2020 at 11:00 AM, followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery, Brockton. Calling hours in the funeral home on Sunday, February 23, 2020 from 3:00-7:00 PM.
