Obituary

Donna M. Sgro-O’Brien, age 75, passed away peacefully on Friday May 26, 2023 surrounded by family at her daughter’s home after a brief illness. She was born and raised in Cambridge, where she met, married and started a family with her former husband, Kenneth J. O'Brien.

Donna was daughter to the late Frank and Virginia (Griffin) Sgro of Brighton, sister to the late Frank J. Sgro of Rhode Island and mother to the late Sean M. O'Brien of Brockton.

In the early 1980's Donna moved to Brockton to raise her children and ended up raising a neighborhood.

Later in life she was the proud owner and sole proprietor of Night Shift Lingerie, a place she loved.

For the last 13 years, Donna had resided in Maine, but returned home to Brockton, MA to be with her family in her final days.

Donna was a fiery spirit who enjoyed being with family, chatting with friends and definitely feeding everyone! She was fondly known as "Ma" by the Southfield neighborhood and beyond, and her reputation as a witty, fresh, but lovingly stern mother figure preceded her.

Donna will be remembered as a warm, witty, caring and non-judgmental woman with a loving heart for animals and a spicy attitude. She was a gentle spirit willing to help anyone and anything without question.

Donna was the devoted sister to Peter D. Sgro of California, the loving mother of Virginia L. “Genna” O’Brien of Brockton, and the cherished Nonie of Raymond O’Brien and his wife Bonnie of Brockton, Nicole O’Brien of Brockton, and Roger Cook III of North Carolina.

Donna also leaves behind her adopted daughter Tracey Jones, her great grandson Bryson Cook, her adopted brother, "The brother that should have been mine.", Stephen Popp, nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren and many loving and adored friends.

Visiting hours will be held at the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (rte. 123) Brockton on Saturday June 3, 2023 from 12-3pm followed by a funeral service at 3pm. Burial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Donna’s family requests that a donation be made in her name to your local MSPCA.
