Dorothy "Jean" J. (Baker) Matson, 69, of Brockton passed away Monday, September 10, 2012 at her home under the care of hospice and her family after a courageous battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. She was the wife of the late Carl A. Matson.
Born February 24, 1943 in Stoughton, MA she was a daughter of the late John Baker and Dorothy (Lowe) Baker. Raised and educated in Stoughton "Jean" was the owner and president of CA Matson Glass Company in Brockton. Running the business was a big part of her life. She enjoyed spending summers in Wareham at her cottage with all her close friends.
A little over 8 years ago, (approximately 2004) Dorothy was stricken by Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), it's a disease that afflicts more healthy people every year than breast cancer. It starts as a nagging cough, eventually scars the lungs and robs people of the ability to process oxygen efficiently causing them to literally suffocate. There is no known cause, affective treatment or cure. She was diagnosed at BIDMC by one of the most prominent pulmonary physicians in the country and expert on the disease. After further testing it was estimated that her life expectancy was approximately 3-5 years. After a few years of ignoring this timetable she became a proponent and large contributor to the leading organization for the fight against this horrible disease, "The Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis".
In 2009 she was invited to join the coalition for a trip to Washington DC to a special meeting of Congress to help create awareness and try to persuade them to provide major federal funding. Approximately 3 years into her fight and wishful anticipation for a new drug or treatment she wanted to attempt a lung transplant even though it was a long shot.
Unfortunately, during the testing process it was discovered that she also had a malignant form of cancer in multiple areas that couldn't be tested accurately or treated aggressively because of the IPF. Most people dealt that hand would have folded it in and given up, but not her. She fought on for another 5 years mainly because she is such a strong woman and it's just not in her nature to give up.
Another major contributor to her miraculous resilience was the love and care she received from her family and friends especially the persistence of her two loving sisters Lynda Suanne and the attitude they conveyed to her of, "Don't believe everything the doctors are telling you until you badger them enough that they give you all the options and the truth". Her remaining days were very peaceful, filled with visits from her family and dear friends.
She is survived by her loving children, Robert M. Slade of Brockton and James M. Slade and his wife Cori of Bridgewater; her siblings, Lynda Walsh, Suanne Bono and her husband Paul, Jack Baker and his wife Lorna, and Stephen Baker; her brother and sisters in law, William Matson, Kristina Lebrocquy and her husband Teddy and Judith Lombard. She is also survived by her several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many dear friends as well as her feline companion "Lucy".
