Dr. George S. Capernaros, 84, of Brockton, passed away at home surrounded by his family on Monday, November 4, 2013 after a period failing health.
George was born on May 26, 1929 in Boston, MA to Stanley and Viola (Thomas) Capernaros. George graduated from Boston College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1951 and went on to earn both a Master of Arts in the Classics as well as a Master of Education, subsequently earning his Ph.D. in the Philosophy of Education.
On graduation from college, George worked for the National Security Agency in Washington, DC before entering the Army and being assigned to the Encryption Department of Signal Corp. On discharge he returned to Washington and resumed his position at the NSA where he specialized in foreign language decryption.
In 1955 George returned to Boston to continue his education at Boston College where he earned his additional post graduate degrees. In 1958 he accepted a position at Brockton High School as a teacher of Latin. In 1963 he moved his family to Brockton where he became an active member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.
He became Head of the Foreign Language Department at Brockton High. On the opening of the new Brockton High School campus in 1972 George became the Assistant Head Master of the red building. In 1975 George was appointed Superintendent of the Bridgewater- Raynham Regional School District where he remained until his retirement in 1989. While George's first love was his family, he enjoyed books, music of all genres, and the study of the history of the church.
Beloved husband of Ruth J. (Cole) Capernaros, devoted father to Stanley G. Capernaros of Brockton, Cole T. Capernaros of Stoughton, Chrysanthie Capernaros of Barnstable and Stacie Capernaros- Hevener of Barnstable. Adoring grandfather of Lianna and Christiana Hevener of Barnstable and George S.J. Capernaros of Brockton. Loving brother to Peter and his wife Frieda Capernaros of Canton and Phillip Capernaros of Sharon. He is also survived by his several nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the Russell Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (Rt.123) Brockton on Friday, November 8th at 11:00AM followed by a funeral service in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 457 Oak St., Brockton at 12:00PM. Interment will follow in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton. Calling hours Thursday from 4:00-8:00PM.
