Obituary

Dr. Peter Agbor-Etang Dr. Peter Agbor-Etang , 61, of Brockton, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at the Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital. He was the husband of Marie-Claire (Tambe) Agbor-Etang. Dr. Peter Agbor-Etang was an embodiment of devotion, perseverance, and courage. He was born in the village of Ajayukndip, Manyu Division, to Reverend John Agbor-Etang and Mami Mariana Ntui. As the fifth of ten children, and one of two boys, Dr. Agbor-Etang was most happy when surrounded by people. Throughout his life, his faith in Jesus Christ would sustain, and propel him to the heights of academia. A devout presbyterian, Dr. Agbor-Etang was a warm and welcoming person. Always engaging, he served as chairperson of many committees at Ntamulung Church in Bamenda where all of his children and grandchildren were baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. Upon immigrating to the USA again, he joined the Easton Presbyterian Church were he immersed himself in church activities. Dr. Agbor-Etang's warmth manifested itself in an indelible smile and a generous spirit. His laughter and hospitality was at once infectious and inspiring. A lantern in his family and community, he was a glow of hope to those who met him. He was indeed a personification of Presbyterian ideals. A native of Ajayukndip, he not only taught his children Ejagham, he wrote very fluently in it, and remained a custodian of Manyu traditions and culture in his household, and the community at large. An avid collector of the annual World Almanac publications, Dr. Agbor-Etang's interests were wide-ranging. He took delight in giving impromptu quizzes on some of the most improbable aspects of world history and current events. Actually, it was impossible to leave a conversation with him without being moved and enriched by his depth of knowledge and compassion for humanity. He constantly and fervently encouraged young people to pursue their dreams and live up to their maximum potential. To him, teaching was more than a career, it was a calling. Peter prided himself in his imaginary culinary skills, which was limited to knowing every spice that went into his favorite dishes. To the amusement of his family, Peter loved to lend a helping hand, albeit verbally, in the kitchen. He fancied his assistance was the reason behind every successful meal. His laughter will forever echo in our dreams. Dr. Agbor-Etang attended the Basel Mission Primary School in Ossing. After Ossing, he proceeded to CPC Bali where he obtained his GCE Ordinary Level Certificate in 1967. After CPC Bali, Dr. Agbor-Etang Peter attended C.C.A.S.T Bambili from 1967 to 1969, earning a GCE Advanced Level Certificate. He then left his native Cameroon for Fourah Bay College in Sierra Leone where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Science. When he returned to Cameroon, he taught Mathematics in C.C.A.S.T Bambili and Physics at Ecole Normale Annexe Bambili from 1973 to 1975. In the Winter of 1975, Dr. Agbor-Etang was admitted into Iowa State University where he earned a Masters of Science in Mathematics and Education. Between 1978 to 1979, he also served as Teaching Assistant at the same institution. He went on to earn a Ph.D in Mathematics and Education. After earning his Doctorate, Dr. Agbor-Etang returned to Cameroon where he was appointed Lecturer at the University of Yaounde I, Ecole Normale Superieur Annex, Bambili. Ten years later, he became an Associate Professor and Researcher. In 2004, he was appointed to the coverted position of Assistant Director of University of Yaounde I, E.N.S. Annex, Bambili; an offer he declined due to ill health. Some time later, Dr. Agbor-Etang immigrated to United States to seek medical treatment. While in the United States, he taught at these Massachusettes institutions of higher learning: Quincy College, Bridgewater State University, Bristol Community College, Pine Manor College, and Wentworth Institute of Technology. Dr. Agbor-Etang is survived by his wife Marie-Claire Tambe Agbor-Etang--who he loved dearly; his children [whom he was very proud of]: Glory Ayuk, Caroline Bate, Albert Arrey, Alvin Ntui, Elvis Mbi, Brian Besong; his grandchildren: Elvis Agboranya, Tracey Oyorobasi E., Dolly Tabe, Arielle Ntui-Ofah. He also left behind a brother John Agbor, and three sisters-Comfort, Lydia and Elizabeth who are going to miss him so much. Funeral Information Funeral services and viewing will be held in the Good Shepherd Presbytarian Church, 701 Foundry St., Easton, MA 02334 on Saturday, May 14th from 1:00-6:00PM.
