Obituary

Dr. Roland Joseph Florio January 30, 1949 – June 5, 2020 Dr. Roland J. Florio, a dedicated and respected physician in Brockton for many years, passed away at his home in Halifax on Friday, June 5th after a period of failing health, surrounded by his loving wife of 33 years, Carole (Thompson) (Broderick) Florio and their family. Born in Brockton, he was the son of the late Roland and Nicolena (DiMarzo) Florio. He attended local schools and graduated from Boston College High School in 1967. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Assumption College in Worcester and a Master of Science Degree from Boston University. Dr. Florio completed his Medical Studies at the Universidad de Guadalajara School of Medicine in Jalisco, Mexico and completed his medical residency at King's County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY and Miriam Hospital in Providence, RI. He also worked extensively in the Pathology Departments at Boston Medical Center. After his formal studies, he returned to Brockton and went on to complete his career in medicine right where it began. It began years before at the Brockton Hospital, which became his home-away-from-home, as an Eagle Scout/orderly and then as a young lab assistant. Dr. Florio was in practice for many years with Dr. Francis Freccero, a revered mentor and close friend. Eventually, he joined the Signature Healthcare Group. Throughout his career, he was devoted to his patients and all of the medical staff that he felt privileged to work beside. During his long service to his native city, he served on many committees and in many capacities including the Director of the Transitional Care Unit at Brockton Hospital. His smile and deep concern for his elderly patients meant he was always welcomed at West Acres and other elder-care facilities throughout the city. He was a humble, kind and gentle man who enjoyed a good chuckle and always put the needs of others first. He was a man of simple pleasures who loved his family and especially enjoyed reminiscing about happy times spent growing up as the second generation of two sets of Italian immigrant grandparents always surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins and homemade Italian food and wine. Dr. Florio was a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Physicians and the Massachusetts Medical Society. Besides his wife, Carole, Dr. Florio leaves his children Terri Hamilton of Raynham, Kristine MacNeil of Northbridge, Dr. Kevin Broderick and his wife Tracy Wyatt of Hanson and Nicholas Florio and his fiancée Felicia Levasseur of Taunton. He also leaves his grandchildren Meredith and Steven Hamilton, Nicole Peters, Jake, Cullen, Luke and Rocco MacNeil, Hailey Broderick and Nevaeh Florio. He was pre-deceased by his granddaughter Alexandra Hamilton. He is also survived by a loving aunt, Geraldine (Florio) Perrault of Brockton, Scott Derby of Middleboro, who is like a son to Dr and Mrs Florio and a steady source of help and support as well as many devoted cousins from the Florio and DiMarzo families. Funeral from the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (RT123) Brockton on Friday at 8:30AM thence to Holy Cross Church, 225 Purchase St., South Easton where a funeral mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul at 10:00AM.
