Edward Peter Kunce, aged 72, passed away Monday afternoon after a long battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He was surrounded by loving family and friends. He was a beloved husband, father and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Ed was born on December 16th, 1951, in Pittsfield, MA where he spent his formative years and learned his love of nature and outdoor passions for hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting. Education was a constant throughout his life starting with his BS degree in Natural Resources from University of Rhode Island and continuing with his master's degrees from Boston University and Harvard University. Upon graduating from URI, Ed received his commission in the Army as a combat engineer officer. He served for 3 years in Berlin, Germany and finished his 9-year service as a company commander in the Massachusetts National Guard. Upon leaving the service, Ed began his career as an Environmental Engineer with Camp, Dresser, and McKee. Ed worked for Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection from 1986 to 2012 where he served as Regional Director, Deputy Commissioner and Acting Commissioner. Ed was awarded the EPA Lifetime achievement award in 2019 culminating from his dedication to public service with the MassDEP.
In his free time, Ed enjoyed hiking, fishing, and hunting. Spending time with his family and traveling with his beloved wife, Nancy. Ed volunteered with the food of the homeless multi-denominational program in Brockton.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Nancy, his son, Michael, daughter-in-law, Kimberley, his daughter Elizabeth and his grandchildren, Abigail, John (Jack), Kate and Sam. His loving sister Janet and her husband Don Rollofson. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
Calling Hours in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St. Brockton on Thursday, August 29th from 4:00~7:00PM. A funeral mass will be on Friday, August 30th at 10:30AM in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Brockton. Interment will follow in South Easton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation at www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org
