Obituary

Online Obituaries Elaine M. (Mitchell) McKeown, 70, of Plympton, passed away Thursday, November 13, 2014, with her loving family and friends by her bedside, following a second courageous battle with cancer. She was the devoted wife of the late Francis X. McKeown. Born on September 17, 1944, she was the daughter of Evelyn M. (Berry) Mitchell, East Bridgewater and Englewood, FL, and the late William E. Mitchell. Elaine was raised in East Bridgewater, where she attended schools before studying at Beaver College, PA. She was a long-time office manager for the former UA Local 276 Plumbers and Pipefitters in Brockton. As a 40-year resident of Plympton, where she and her husband raised their family, she took an active role in the community. She served as President of the Library Trustees, as member of the Plympton Democratic Town Committee, as town election official, and as communicant and Eucharistic Minister of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Carver. Elaine was an avid reader and seasoned traveler. Her interest in history was evidenced by the pride she felt for her familys contribution to early MA history. A Mitchell family ancestor, Experience Mitchell, was one of the first proprietors in the Plymouth Bay Colony, Duxbury, and the Elmwood section of East Bridgewater. The family established a forge and tannery business in East Bridgewater, which is credited as serving as a catalyst to the development of the shoe industry in Brockton. In addition to her mother, Elaine is survived by her daughters, Megan McKeown-Stuart of Boston and Erin Mitchell McKeown and her companion Brendan L. Greene of South Yarmouth; her grandson, William L. White of Boston; her brother, Robert A. Mitchell of East Bridgewater; her sister, Marilyn D. Mitchell of Brockton. She also leaves behind her godparents, Joanne M. and Donald E. Nelson of Brockton, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by her son Francis X. McKeown, II.
