Phaneuf, of Fairhaven, formerly of Brockton, July 22, 2004, Elizabeth A. “Betty” (Gillis) Phaneuf, 85 years. Wife of the late Joseph T. Phaneuf and mother of Joseph T. Phaneuf and his wife Michaela Conley of Maryland, John J. and his wife Elaine of Bridgewater, Paul F. of Pocasset, Thomas P. and his wife Joyce of East Bridgewater, Elizabeth Sinohui and her husband Ernest of Tucson AZ, Barbara A. Phaneuf and her partner Liz Bennett of Fiarhaven and David M. and his wife Jane of East Bridgewater.

Funeral from the J. Frank Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton, Monday at 8am. Funeral Mass in St. Edith Stein Church at 9am. Burial in Calvary Cemetery.

Obituary

Elizabeth A. “Betty” (Gillis) Phaneuf, died Thursday evening at Our Ladys Haven in Fairhaven, surrounded by her family and friends, after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s. Born in Dorchester, daughter of the late John J. and Marguerite (Welsh) Gillis, she had been a longtime resident of Brockton before moving to Fairhaven.

She was a graduate of Needham High School, class of 1936. She was a secretary until her marriage to Joseph T. Phaneuf of Brockton in 1939. After raising their family she was a secretary for the former Quinn Freight Lines, Brockton for 20 years before her retirement.

She was a former communicant of St. Edward’s Church, now St. Edith Stein, where she was involved in church activities; the Ladies Sodality, St. Edward’s PTA and the Marion Club. She was an avid reader and enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren.

She was the wife of the late Joseph T. Phaneuf. She is survived by two daughters Elizabeth Sinohui and her husband Ernest of Tucson Arizona, and Barbara A. Phaneuf and her partner Liz Bennett of Fairhaven, five sons Joseph T. Phaneuf and his wife Michaela Conley of Columbia Maryland, John J. and his wife Elaine of Bridgewater, Paul F. of Pocasset, Thomas P. and his wife Joyce of East Bridgewater and David M. and his wife Jane of East Bridgewater, 19 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, two sisters Dorothy Gilpatrick of Needham and Jean Noll of Florida and several nieces and nephews.
