Evelyn Kanelos
, wife of the late Ernest Kanelos, died Wednesday, February 3, 2010. She was a resident of Whitman, where the family had lived since 1946. Mr. Kanelos, her husband of 28 years, preceded her in death in 1968.
Mrs. Kanelos was born in New Bedford, MA, the daughter of the late William and Julia (Belisis) Canelos, who emigrated here from Greece at the turn of the 20th century. She and Mr. Kanelos were married in 1941 in Brockton. When Mr. Kanelos, a veteran of World War II, returned home in 1945, they resumed their life in Whitman. Together, they opened the Brockton Hobby Shop, where they sold model planes and Lionel trains, mentoring many boys and giving weekly classes in model building and sponsoring Sunday field trips for boys of all ages. Over the years, the store evolved to include toys, crafts, fine art supplies and picture framing, and eventually became known as the Graphics Arts Shop. Mrs. Kanelos together with her son Bill, operated the store for many years after Mr. Kanelos' death.
Mrs. Kanelos loved her family, her faith, home and community, and was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Brockton, where she taught Sunday school as a young women. In addition, she was a past President of the Whitman Woman's Club and served on the board of the Whitman Visiting Nurse Association. She was also a member of the Pilgrim Chapter, order of the Eastern Star in Whitman, serving as the chapter's Worthy Matron, along side Mr. Kanelos as Worthy Patron.
Loved and loving mother, she is survived by her son, William and daughter Elaine (and husband Paul), as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Information
Trisagion and private funeral services were held last week in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, followed by burial next to Mr. Kanelos at Mayflower Hill Cemetery in Taunton.
