Obituary

Geneva Cranford Prince, 100, of Brockton, passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at the Life Care Center of West Bridgewater. She was the wife of the late Robert Stephen Prince. As she lay on the gurney, her forearm shattered, Geneva, her husband and son at her side, listened to the orthopedic surgeon's grim assessment. The injury would require surgery in a few days once the swelling went down. As the doctor walked away, Geneva's son asked, "Do you want to get a second opinion, Mom?" Smiling broadly through her pain, her blue eyes alight, Geneva announced enthusiastically, "No - she seems nice!" That was Geneva. If you were nice, you need possess no further qualifications in this life. Geneva enjoyed playing hymns on her piano, attending Christ Congregational Church, was a Cub Scout den mother, "Mom" to a Chilean exchange student, Girl Scout assistant troop leader and long time volunteer for causes dear to her - Brockton Visiting Nurse Association, Goddard/Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary, Boston University Women's Council and the United Way among them. Charity and other hobbies aside, Geneva collected friends her whole life. She was genuinely interested in the everyday personal connections to be made with her fellow man. If Geneva encountered a friend or acquaintance, old or new, and said, "How are you?" she actually wanted to know - about you, your health, your kids and grandkids, their accomplishments, your last vacation. For however long she spoke with you, she felt your pain, cheered your success and happiness or shared your concerns as if they were her own. While the rest of the world was too busy to talk, she would spot you across the street and run over to see how your daughter was doing at college or how your sister's heart surgery went. Remarkably, she always remembered what she had last discussed with you even if you didn't. Geneva was born in New Harbour, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland in 1921 to George Whyne Cranford and Lucy Parsons Cranford. Her parents brought her to Brockton when she was three months old. She attended Belmont Elementary, Whitman Junior High and Brockton High School with her brother, the late George W. Cranford, Jr. After graduating with a BA from Boston University School of Practical Arts and Letters, Geneva taught secretarial skills for three years at Westbrook Junior College in Portland, Maine. She married Robert S. Prince in 1946 and they remained devoted partners for 64 years until his death in 2010. Geneva is survived by her children, Diane P. Shages and husband John D. Shages of Washington, DC, Stephen G. Prince and wife Diane C. (Tasho) Prince of Brockton, MA and Jane L. Prince and husband David J. Murphy of St. Paul, MN ; grandchildren Leslie E. Shages of Washington DC, Alexandra L. Prince of St. Paul MN and Samuel E. Murphy and wife, Lindsay Sessing of St. Paul, MN ; great grandchildren, Benjamin Kuta of Washington DC and Ava Murphy of St. Paul, MN.
