It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of George Sarkisian on September 24, 2024, at the age of 94. Born on September 9, 1930, in the Bronx, New York, to Simon Sarkisian and Shamiram Hagopian, George faced early hardship when he lost his parents to illness at the age of 7 years old. He was lovingly adopted by his great Aunt Manoushag & Uncle Dickran Arakelian who raised him in Jersey City, New Jersey.
At the age of 18, George met the love of his life, Starry Baker, in Massachusetts. After quickly moving from New Jersey to Massachusetts, the two were married on September 2, 1951. Shortly thereafter, George was drafted into the Army of Engineers, serving two years in the Korean War, based in Stuttgart, Germany. Upon returning, George reunited with Starry and they began their life together on the Baker Farm in Cary Hill, Brockton, Massachusetts. A city boy turned farmer, George worked daily alongside Starry's four brothers and in-laws, delivering eggs and milk to businesses and residences across the city of Brockton.
George and Starry welcomed their first daughter, Sheree Shamiram on October 30, 1954, followed by their second child, Gary Garabed, two years later. 8 years later their third child, Georgette Siranoush was born. The family grew on a foundation of love, hard work, and togetherness. George apprenticed at several printing companies before he started a successful career in the printing industry. He worked most of his career at Halliday Lithograph in Hanover MA.
In the 70's he was one of the founding members of The Armenian Cultural Society of Greater Brockton and it's mission was to provide college scholarships to Armenian Students. This organization provided education to Armenian families in the area including reading and writing the Armenian Language. The fundraising effort including events such as Armenian Dances and picnics at the Sons of Italy Park in Brockton.
In his spare time, he loved gardening, deep sea fishing, and took immense pride in landscaping his home on Breer Circle. Neighbors on Breer Circle were envious of his green thumb most of it learned at his wife's farm on Cary Hill.
He is survived by his two loving daughters, Georgette and Sheree, as well as his four cherished grandchildren: Stephanie Shamiram Brooks, Eric Arakel Brooks, Ashley Hanem Sarkisian, and Allison Esther Sarkisian. George also leaves behind five great-grandchildren—Jemma Naneh, Aria Hanem, Leo Garabed, Blake Anoush and Brynn Ani who were the absolute loves of his life.
Predeceased by his beloved wife of almost 60 years, Starry and his dear son Gary, George now joins them in peace. He is survived by his two devoted daughters, Sheree Brooks and her husband Richard and Georgette Sarkisian. He was predeceased by his loving sister, Joan Babigian and his brother Arky Arakelian. He also leaves behind his sister Lilian Shahian Baklarz.
He was grandfather to Ashley Burch and her husband Peter, Allison Sarkisian and her fiancée Paul Joseph Haberski, Eric Brooks and his wife Petra and Stephanie Brooks. He was great grandfather to Blake and Brynn Burch, Jemma and Aria Sarkisian and Leo Haberski. He leaves behind many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, October 4th in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., Brockton from 9:00-11:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton.
