Obituary

George J. Thomas, Sr., a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed on to eternal life on July 5, 2022 surrounded by his family. He was a religious man who wanted nothing for himself and kindly assisted everyone in need. George was born on December 2, 1935 in Brockton, Ma to the late George and Annie Thomas. He was the youngest of nine children. He graduated from Brockton High School in 1954 and immediately joined the United States Army. He married Sheila Ann (Butler) Thomas on November 16, 1958; with whom he spent the best 63 years. They loved being with family and friends, especially summers at New Silver Beach. He was employed by the State of Massachusetts, Division of Employment as an employment specialist for forty-two years. George loved to be involved with community activities. He spent time spinning the records for the CYO, lobbying for local politicians, and working for the Brockton Parks and Recreation Department. He led the local basketball and softball leagues. He was the president of the Eastside Little League Association. His son has a ball from the game when his team beat his dad's. George was an avid sports fan. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren whenever they stepped on the field, the mound, the court, or on the stage. You could always hear him yelling encouragement to them, the referees, and umpires. Two of his greatest accomplishments were having the baseball field at the Mary Baker School named after him and his induction into the Brockton Athletic Hall of Fame. He truly enjoyed being a part of both of those celebrations. He loved to travel to many places with his family and friends especially to Walt Disney World. George is survived by his wife Sheila, his children George Jr. and wife Helen, Sherrie Rioux, Debra Thomas-Beal and husband Jeff, and Michael Thomas and his wife Tricia. He always put his wife, children and family before himself. George proved to be the most loving and caring father in the world. He involved his children in everything that he did. He taught them some of the greatest lessons in life such as being kind to everyone and how to best save your money. He loved each of his grandchildren, April, Alicia (Dan), Justin (Alyson), Tim, Ryan, Shannon, Catie, Danny, Sarah, Alyssa and Katelyn. They all enjoyed spending time with him and his great stories and made-up songs. He would light up whenever his great-granddaughter Madison would visit. He is survived by his sister Nellie Asack, his sisters-in-law Carol Mandeville and Lynne Jamoulis (Jimmy), his brother-in-law John Butler (Jan) and many nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his parents and his siblings (Saad, Johnny, Al, Michael, Lillian, Marion and Joseph). He also was predeceased by his in-laws John and Mildred Butler, his brothers-in-law (Butchy Mandeville, Ray Robishaw, Bruno Martelli, and George Asack), and his sister-in-law (Bea Duff).
