Obituary

Georgia Ann (Stevens) Tasho of Owls Head, Maine and Brockton, Massachusetts, 100, passed away peacefully December 20, 2025 at her cottage in Owls Head, Maine.

Georgia was born November 25, 1925 in Korce, Albania to Ligordi Stefan and Eftalia (Dishnica).

At age 5, Georgia immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island with her mother, Eftalia and sister, Polly to join Ligordi, who had immigrated earlier to Rockland, Maine and had set up a home and a fruit sales business under the English version of their last name, Stevens. Ligordi later opened a full grocery market in the South End of Rockland, Maine. Georgia often spoke warmly of her parents, remembering them as role models of gratitude for being in America, and of hard work, sharing with others, and being a close, loving family.

Georgia graduated from Rockland (Maine) High School in 1944, and with Polly, continued to operate their father's market after they inherited it from him. During this time, she met Christy Tasho of Brockton, Massachusetts, who had cousins living in Bangor, Maine and met Georgia while vacationing in the mid-coast area. She and Christy married at Saint George Albanian Orthodox Cathedral in South Boston on May 15, 1955. They made their home in the house Christy owned on Moraine St. in Brockton. Their son, Paul Anthony, was born July 6, 1958.

After Christy died January 10, 1968, Georgia became co-owner of The California Fruit Market in Brockton, which Christy had owned with his brother George. She continued to live by one of her favorite sayings, "a lot of work and a little play," devoting herself to her beloved son until his untimely death in 1975, her church, the family business, and "the cottage at Dynamite Beach" overlooking the Rockland Harbor close to her sister and family.

Georgia also attended Bridgewater State College, where she received a bachelor's degree, master's degree, and Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in education. She had a 25-year teaching career at Brookfield Elementary School in Brockton, and was active in many professional associations. She was a member of the Brockton Education Association, the Massachusetts Teachers Association, and the National Education Association. She served on a committee for the accreditation of teachers, and for 19 years she was on the board of directors for the Plymouth County Teachers Association. She taught in the southeastern geography magnet program, an after-school program at Bridgewater State affiliated with National Geographic, leading her 5th-grade class to first-place wins 3 times in a row. She was a founding member and president for 3 years of the Massachusetts Mu chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Organization for Women Educators, and she continued to stay active and support its altruistic programs throughout her life.

Georgia was a member of the Saint George Albanian Orthodox Cathedral in Boston, and of its Albanian Ladies Group for church fundraising and charitable work. She was also a member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Brockton, where she was active in the charitable activities of the church's chapter of the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society. She also did other volunteer work, including for St. Paul's Kitchen in Brockton and as an Albanian language interpreter for refugees from Kosovo who had children in the Brockton schools. Georgia received a humanitarian award from Plymouth County Teachers Association for her volunteer work.

In retirement Georgia divided her time between her home in Brockton and her home on Rockland Harbor in Owl's Head, Maine, which was a gathering place for family and friends alike and a spot where countless funny, happy, and loving memories were made.

Georgia was predeceased by her beloved husband Christy and son Paul, both of whom left this world far too soon for those they left behind; by her dear sister Polly and husband Douglas Curtis, Sr.; and by many dear friends, colleagues, and extended family members. She is survived by her sister Polly's children, whom she treasured as her own: Douglas Curtis, Jr. and wife Ferolyn, and children Matthew (Rachel), Andrea Curtis-Southard (Tyler), and Michael (Lisa); Gregory Curtis and children Diana Shutzer (Jamie), Charisse Stanley (Carson), and Christopher (Jovielyn); Ervin Curtis, II and wife Christine, and children Paul (Laura), Daniel (Jinhee), and Caroline; and Georgia Curtis. She is also survived by several great-great-nieces and nephews; by beloved cousins Ligori Dishnica and wife Angie, who was like an angel to her; and by many other cousins, friends, colleagues, and parishioners from both churches.
