Helen S. (Skenas) Daphnis Helen S. (Skenas) Daphnis , 87, of Brockton died Sunday, June 14, 2009 at Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital. She was the wife of the late George P. Daphnis. Born June 18, 1921 in Brockton, she was the daughter of the late Apostolos Skenas and Mary (Kifisas) Skenas. Raised and educated in Brockton she was a graduate of Brockton High School class of 1939. Helen was a World War II Veteran serving in the United States Navy WAVES division. She was stationed in Washington from 1943- 1946. After her marriage to George the couple moved to New York and later returned to Brockton in the early 1950's. Helen began a social column, "Socially Yours" for her husband George's newspaper "The Greek Sunday News" under the pen name, "Tillie" and later "The Hellenic Chronicle". She wrote for over 45 years. For many years Helen worked with her brother James and her son Peter, with their business, "United Furniture Company" in Brockton. She was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and The Ladies Philoptochos Society. She was very active in the Greek community in Boston and New England. Helen enjoyed spending summers on Cape Cod in Hyannis. She is survived by her children, Margo E. Daphnis of Wayland, Peter P. Daphnis and his wife Joanne of Westport and James J. Daphnis and his wife Peg Correia of Portsmouth N.H.; her grandchildren, Paul, Nicole, Sophia, and Andrew J. Daphnis; her two brothers, James Skenas and his wife Jeannette of Brockton and Angelo Skenas and his wife Marianthe of West Roxbury. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Stefanie M. Daphnis. Funeral Information Funeral from the Russell Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (RT123) Brockton on Thursday, June 18th at 10:00AM followed by a funeral service in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 457 Oak St., Brockton at 11:00AM. The Rev. Anthony Evangelatos will officiate. Interment will follow in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton. Calling hours in the Russell Pica Funeral Home Wednesday 5:00-8:00PM.
