Herbert F. Bates Jr., 90, of Raynham formerly Brockton and Mashpee passed away on Monday, October 17, 2022 at Copley At Stoughton. He was the husband of the late Marie J. (Joyce) Bates.

Born May 30, 1932 in Brockton, he was the beloved son of Herbert F. Bates Sr. and Marion (Fudge) Bates. Raised in Brockton he was a graduate of Brockton High School Class of 1950, and Dartmouth College in 1954. He enlisted in the Unites States Air Force in 1955 where he served as a pilot until 1958.

Herbert worked at M. H. Bates Leather Company from 1959 to 1965. He worked at New England Life from 1965 to 1971. He then transitioned to banking worked as Vice President/Treasurer at Abington Savings Bank, and Rockland Savings Bank. He became a member of the Lions Club in 1972 and served for many years.

He enjoyed spending time with family, travel, boating and food (he especially enjoyed lobster and strawberry shortcake).

He is survived by his loving children, Joyce E. Bates and her wife Donna Goneau of Beverly, and David F. Bates and his wife Reena Bates of South Easton, his grandchildren Matthew Bates, and Abigail Bates. He was predeceased by his sisters Elizabeth Marshall, and Barbara Bates.

Funeral service in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (Rt 123) Brockton on Friday October 21st, 2022 at 10:15am. Visitation for the public at 10:00am. A private family interment will follow.
