, 86, of Brockton, passed away Thursday, December 15, 2011 at the Brockton VA Medical Center. He was the husband of Irene L. (Iacovo) Litchfield.
Born August 10, 1925 in Brockton he was the son of the late Walter E. Litchfield and Marie F. (O'Brien) Litchfield. Howard was a decorated WWII veteran, proudly serving in the U.S. Army, receiving a Purple Heart, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon, WWII victory Medal and the Bronze Battle Star. A lifelong Brockton resident he worked for the US Postal Service for 40 years and retired as the Director of Mail Processing for the SE Region.
Howard's greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family, in his backyard by his pool and garden. He and Irene were married on October 18, 1953 and had a wonderful life raising their family, traveling, and dancing. Known for his witty humor and having a song for every occasion, he enjoyed times with his Brocktonian friends, many whom were veterans. Howard enjoyed golfing and socializing with his friends at Thorny Lea. He was an avid Boston sports fan and never lost hope with the Red Sox! He was a past director of the Brockton Postal Employees Credit Union, a member of ITAM, NARFE, VFW and DAV.
He is survived by the love of his life Irene L. (Iacovo) Litchfield, married for 58 years; his adoring daughter Lisa Zani and her husband Dan of Bridgewater; his grandchildren, Alyssa and Brian McSherry both of Bridgewater and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the Russell Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., Brockton on Tuesday, December 20th at 9:30AM thence to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 439 West St., Brockton where a funeral mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul at 10:30AM. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Brockton. Calling hours in the Russell Pica Funeral Home Monday 4:00-7:00PM.
