Obituary

Hugh Francis McGlone, age 85, of Brockton, MA passed away peacefully surrounded by family at his home of 53 years on September 5, 2023. He was born in Brockton to the late Hugh Francis and Adeline (Bogni) McGlone, and lived in Quincy during his school-age years.

Hugh is survived by his best friend and wife of 57 years, Gerardine ("Geri") M. (Linskey) McGlone, his loving children, Michelle McGlone of Easton, MA, Laurie McGlone of Newport, Rhode Island, Hugh McGlone and his wife Beth of Mansfield, MA, and Erin O'Brien and her husband Sean of Abington, MA. He is the loving "Grampa" to Hugh and Katherine McGlone of Mansfield, MA, and Brenna, Jake and Liam O'Brien of Abington, MA. He is also survived by his sister Carol Perkins of Weymouth, MA. In addition to his immediate family, Hugh was loved and cherished by his in-laws, Bob and Maura Linskey and Denise Linskey Rich, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Hugh graduated from Quincy High School in 1956 and went on to receive his undergraduate degree from Northeastern University and his MBA from Suffolk University. He enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17 and continued on to Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. He served aboard several destroyers, including the USS Samuel B. Roberts (DD-823). His service included the Cuban Missile Crisis, specifically the Cuban Blockade and one tour in Vietnam. On his journey home, the ship crossed the equator, earning him the title "shellback." Upon return to the states, he served at the U.S. Pentagon, where he established a K-9 program. After 25 years of Naval service, Hugh retired as Lieutenant Commander.

A decorated veteran, Hugh was proudly pinned as a Surface Warfare Officer, and earned a National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for his service during the Cuban Quarantine, Naval Reserve Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and the Republic Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Hugh worked for 37 years as a financial advisor for Morgan Stanley, a career which enabled him to serve hundreds of families with his dedication, knowledge, and passion for markets. An avid reader, a Wall Street Journal or Investor's Business Daily was never too far from his reach. He was happiest when talking about stocks to friends, family, and even to the medical staff who cared for him during his final weeks. Through the years, he received the very best care at the West Roxbury VA Hospital from the doctors, nurses and staff in both the CCU and medical floors. Their warmth, laughter and encouragement brought out the best in him.
