Ilias "Louie" Smiliotopoulos

d. March 4, 2026

Brockton

Ilias “Louie” Smiliotopoulos, 79, of Brockton, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family — just as he had lived his life: devoted to those he cherished most.

Born in April of 1946, in Salmoni, Pyrgos Elias, Greece, Ilias was the beloved son of Ioannis and Theoni and one of five children. At 18 years old, he proudly served in the Greek Army. With courage and determination, he later traveled to the United States to build a life filled with opportunity, family, and purpose — a dream he fulfilled through hard work, resilience, and faith.

In May of 1975, Ilias married his greatest blessing, Christina Panagopoulos, at St. Catherine’s Greek Orthodox Church of Quincy, Massachusetts. Together they created a beautiful life in Brockton as members of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church community, raising their two children, Yianni and Olga, in a home filled with love, laughter, and strong Greek traditions. Ilias was a devoted husband and father, who taught his children the importance of faith, integrity, family loyalty, and pride in their Greek heritage. His wisdom and values will continue to guide generations to come.

A skilled craftsman, Ilias began his career as a finish carpenter in Greece and continued his trade after immigrating to America. He later worked alongside his brothers in opening an auto body garage before dedicating over 30 years to General Dynamics as a senior craftsman.

Outside of work, Ilias had a deep love for gardening and was affectionately known in the Brockton community as the “plant whisperer.” Each summer, he transformed his yard into a vibrant sanctuary of flowers, trees, and vegetables, nurturing them with patience and pride. He enjoyed bowling for many years in the Timber Lanes Bowling League and was a passionate sports fan — cheering enthusiastically for the New England Patriots and never missing the chance to talk about Greek soccer, “Olympiakara".

Above all, Ilias’ greatest joy was his family. He leaves behind his loving wife, Christina; his son, Yianni and his wife Angela; and his daughter, Olga and her husband Derek. He was an adoring and proud grandfather to Athena and her husband Riley; and Ilias and Sofie, who were the light of his life. He also leaves his cherished sisters, Nikoleta, Maria, and Sofia, along with many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

Ilias will be remembered for his generous heart, his witty sense of humor, his strong hands, and the strength that anchored his family. His laughter, guidance, and love will live on in every story shared at the table, every flower planted in his honor, and every tradition passed down. “Aionia i Mnimi”, eternal be his memory.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 457 Oak St, Brockton, from 10:30-11:30am with a Funeral Service to begin at 11:30am. His burial will follow at Melrose Cemetery, Brockton.
