West Bridgewater, MA - Irene Mary (Whalen) Churchill, of West Bridgewater, died peacefully on July 22, 2025 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was 89. Irene was born in Brockton, MA on November 1, 1935, the only child of the late Bernard and Bernice (Trow) Whalen.

Irene was raised in Brockton, attended St. Patrick's School and worked as a legal secretary for several years. In 1960, she married David L. Churchill of Avon and raised her four children in Brockton before moving to West Bridgewater in 1979. Together with her husband, Irene owned and operated Wright's Greenhouses. Over the next 35 years, it was Irene's pleasure to help provide the community with beautiful plants and flowers, seven days a week (including holidays so others could more fully enjoy theirs). Irene retired late in life and resided in West Bridgewater until her passing, having spent her last three and a half months at Life Care Center of West Bridgewater.

Irene was very active in her community. She was a long-time member of the West Bridgewater Lion's Club and a recent Melvin Jones Fellowship award recipient. A faith-filled member of St Ann's Parish in West Bridgewater, she served for a long time on the Parish Council. She was active in local politics and was a member of the West Bridgewater Republican Town Committee for many years. In addition, she served as the secretary of the West Bridgewater Rent Control Board.

Irene and David spent 14 wonderful winters in Florida and valued the friendships made there. She also enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles, reading mysteries, and watching the Hallmark Channel. She spent many hours over the years with friends at the West Bridgewater Council on Aging.

Irene leaves behind her husband of 65 years, David L Churchill, daughter Paula (and Glenn) Morrison of East Taunton, son Mark (and Sandra) Churchill of West Bridgewater, daughter Karen Churchill of Easton, daughter-in-law Jen Churchill of Oklahoma City, grandchildren, Lorian Schaeffer, Carissa Churchill, Jessica Galavotti, Stephanie Gaboury, Brittany Lorgeree, Timothy Churchill and 6 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her eldest son, David P. Churchill of Michigan.

Visiting Hours will be held at Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 441 South Main St., (Rt28) West Bridgewater, MA on Wednesday, July 30th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, July 31st at 10:00 AM at St. Ann's Church, 103 N. Main St., West Bridgewater, MA. A graveside service will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery in West Bridgewater.
