IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James E.
Smith
March 15, 1954 – September 11, 2022
James E. Smith passed away on September 11, 2022, at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital after a rapid and unexpected decline in health. In his final days, his family was incredibly grateful for the unwavering support of his closest friends and the kindness and empathy of his ICU care team.
A lifelong resident of Brockton, following in the footsteps of his father, Jim joined the Brockton Police Department in 1985 as a patrolman. He moved on to become an undercover detective for more than 20 years, he also assisted in federal investigations with the DEA & ATF, and was sworn in as a Deputy US Marshall with the ATF. From 2015-2017, was assigned to the former Mayor of Brockton William Carpenter's protection unit. He was also a member of the Brockton License Commission and a member of the Brockton Police Honor Guard.
In 2017, Jim retired after 32 years of dedicated service, proudly wearing badge #1.
Jim was an avid golfer, great friend and always the first to offer help. He enjoyed traveling and lived his life to fullest. He was also, so looking forward to becoming a first time grandfather this November. Jim is survived by his daughter Kendra Smith, his son Justin Smith, brother Leo, twin sister Anne, sister Catherine, and step-daughters Nikki and Devon.
Jim's sense of fun, mischief and laughter will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Friends are invited to celebrate his life at Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (Rt123) Brockton, Tuesday, Sept. 20th from 2-6pm. In keeping with Jim's character, we know he would want his final send-off to be reflective of his light-hearted uniqueness.
