James Watson, Jr., lovingly known as “Jim,” passed away on July 20, 2026, in Brockton, Massachusetts, at the age of 81.
Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, he was the son of the late James M. Watson, Sr., and Eugenia (Baskerville) Watson. Jim leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, quiet strength, and a deep sense of community.
Jim attended both private and public schools. After high school, he graduated from the University of Massachusetts, where he earned master’s degrees in marine biology and computer science. He went on to build a distinguished 39-year career, primarily in the Brockton Public School System as a science teacher, inspiring generations of students to stay curious, practice patience, and use their God-given talents to make the world better.
He expressed his faith through the many lives he touched, encouraged, and uplifted. His love of science, teaching, and nature was reflected in his commitment to learning, devotion to his students, and steadfast belief in each person’s potential. In addition to encouraging his students to excel academically, he guided them to nurture their physical, social, and personal well-being, believing that true growth required the development of the whole person.
Jim was a lifelong “four sport” coach and was instrumental in founding Camp Westwood’s in Stoughton, Ma, a space that teaches holistic movement experience and promotes expression, creation, and healing through dance.
Mr. Watson was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Donald. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Meg) Watson; his children, Lori A. Watson of Brockton and James Michael Watson and his wife, Danielle DeOssie, of Norwood; his brother, Charles Watson of Brockton; his granddaughter, Abigail Watson; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at Central Methodist Church, 65 West Elm Street, Brockton, MA. A celebration of life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s memory may be made to L. Street Mission at Central Methodist Church, 65 W. Elm Street, Brockton, MA 02301.
