Jean Magloire Descartes of Brockton, MA, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2022 after a lengthy illness.

The second born and only son of the late Joseph Ultima Descartes and Marie Anne Precina Descartes (Belotte), Jean was born October 23, 1949 in Mirebalais, Haiti. While in Haiti, he completed secondary school at Lycee Simone O. Duvalier, Mirebalais.

After completing school in Haiti, he participated in a leadership course in Paris, France. He then returned to Haiti and was named the School Director of Jean Phillipe D'eau, a primary school in Mirebalais.

Upon immigrating to the United States in 1980, Jean landed his first job in Lincoln Square NY, at the Lincoln Square, Home for Adults, quickly earning a supervisor role in maintenance. After moving to Boston, he spent 10 years in another supervisory role at the former Newton Wellesley Nursing Home.

Wanting to work more directly with others, Jean then switched careers and spent the next 20 years caring for the elderly and disabled at the former Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation, Tower Hill in Canton, MA.

It was during his early years in Brockton that Jean decided to pursue his calling in ministry. He earned a Pastoral Certificate from Berean College (Assembly of God) and then spent many years as an Assistant Pastor with the First Haitian Church of Brockton, "The Rock".

While Jean was a firm believer in structure and discipline, he made every effort to ensure that he was also gracious, caring, and kind. With his dimples and smile, you could count on him for a joke or two, or three.

Jean was most recently an active member of Brockton's First Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed reading, gardening & landscaping, and spending time with his children.

Jean was proud of many things. However, he was most proud of his faith in God.

Jean leaves behind his wife of 34 years: Suzette Descartes (Decamp); his children: Jessica Descartes, Joseph O. Descartes, Jonathan Descartes [predeceased], and Janice C. Descartes; his sisters: Marie Yves Descartes (Haiti), Marie Ertha Descartes (Haiti), and Marie Ange Descartes (Canada); his mother-in-law, Clermelie Decamp; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Per his request, final arrangements will be private. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 16th at 5:00pm at First Church of the Nazarene, 89 N. Pearl St., Brockton, MA 02301. Reception to follow at 940 Main Street, Brockton MA, 02301.

If you are moved to do so, consider a donation in Jean's name to Brockton's First Church of the Nazarene, 89 N. Pearl St. Brockton, MA 02301. Donations and well wishes may also be sent to Suzette Descartes at 18 Macy Avenue, Brockton, MA 02302.
