Obituary

Jean Elizabeth (O'Reilly) Rix, 81, of Brockton, passed away after a prolonged battle with dementia on Sunday, August 14, 2022 at the Hellenic Nursing Home in Canton. Born Wednesday, April 9, 1941 in Brockton, she was the daughter of the late James H. O'Reilly and Eileen P. (Reardon) O'Reilly and wife of the late Cameron L. Rix. Raised in Brockton, she graduated from Saint Patrick's School in 1959. For many years she was active in the Saint Patrick's parish as a member of the folk group, a Eucharistic minister, and in hosting parish deacons and priests with family, songs, conversation, and meals. In 1978, Jean and Ron opened a breakfast and lunch restaurant. As a lover of tongue-twisters, Jean really wanted to name it the Fig Plucker's Place, but they agreed upon Rix's Six Mixed Biscuits. While owning a restaurant presented many opportunities for expressing her creativity, if it could be done, Jean's I-can-do-it-better approach found her exploring and mastering knitting, sewing, rug braiding, tole painting, basket weaving, caning, ceramics, and reading. Cooking always remained a constant in her life and she could frequently be found talking about food and reading cookbooks and food magazines - a passion that she passed to all of her children. In her more recent years, with her friend Dick Briggs who loved her dearly, she enjoyed taking her dog, Dukie, for very long walks at DW Fields Park and throughout Brockton as well as scenic drives throughout the South Shore. She is survived by her siblings Ellen Legault and Michael O'Reilly; her children Tim & Kellie Rix of Brockton and their children Mary, Cameron, and Ian; Anne & Kevin McElearney of Falmouth, ME and their children Colin, Kathryn, and Owen; Christine & John Kwesell of Portsmouth, NH and their daughter Emily; and Amy & Tom Goins of Asheville, NC and their daughter Audrey. The Rix family would like to extend an expression of gratitude and appreciation to staff at the Hellenic Nursing Home. They loved and cared for Jean like she was a part of their own family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hellenic Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 601 Sherman Street, Canton, MA 02021. Following Cremation, a Memorial Gathering will be held in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (Rt123) Brockton on Sunday, August 21st from 11:00AM-1:00PM followed by Memorial Service in the funeral home at 1:00PM. Interment will be on Monday, August 22nd at 11:30AM in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton.
