Jeffrey Archer Proctor, 42, of East Bridgewater, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 14, 2021. Born in Worcester, Jeff grew up in Leicester and Spencer before living in the Boston area. He lived in East Bridgewater with his family for the past several years.
Jeffrey's enormous heart and presence were felt by everyone he knew. There are two types of people in the world: those that loved Jeff, and those that just hadn't met him. An author, a high school thespian, and often unintentional comedian, Jeff was somehow born with the soul of a 50 year old British gentleman. He was an author, and it's ironic that words can't quite capture his uniqueness, charm, humor and humility.
As a child, Jeff developed a lifelong fascination with World War II naval history. His grandfather, Earl Fitch, was a WWII Navy veteran, and Jeff was enraptured with his stories at an early age. With an imagination that rivaled Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes, his youth was filled with an incredibly loving family, as well as with hilarity and creativity. Jeff could draw and write, he could imagine entire universes, and he could sing, but he couldn't dance. In high school, in addition to musicals, chorus, and the school newspaper, Jeff became the quartermaster for his brother Adam's marching band. Jeff attended Curry College before transferring to Emerson College, graduating with a degree in writing and publishing in 2001. He formed long lasting friendships at both schools, where bad movies, wild laughter, and creative story telling were the order of the day.
After college, Jeff moved into an apartment in Watertown and was thrilled when, two years later, his brother joined him. Their sense of humor, "curious but mostly harmless," was loved by most, while others were less sure. He loved nights out in the city with his cousins and friends, visiting every museum he could find, and touring any ship in port that would have him on board. He was a loyal supporter of Adam's music, and this led to an orchestrated meeting where his world changed – the night he met Meaghan. Love followed quickly. They married in Vermont in 2009 in a ceremony so full of joy that people speak of it to this day. Jeff worked for St. Mary St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Charlestown for a few years where he touched the lives of hundreds of people with his sincere smile and caring nature. He became a fixture in the church community where people often stopped by just to see him or some to learn more about the Charlestown Navy Yard.
Jeff's biggest joy came in 2014 when he and Meg welcomed Tucker Archer into their world. Tucker is so like his Dad, a reflection of Jeffrey's love and compassion, his brilliant mind and unique view of the world.
Jeff had a gift for writing. He published seven novels and numerous short stories under the pen name "J.P. Burke," a tribute to Meaghan. His final work, "Blades", a biography of helicopter pilot Commander Don Broderick, was his first non-fiction book and one of his proudest accomplishments. Each year, he participated in National Novel Writing month, writing a new novel every November for the past ten years. One of his greatest joys as a writer was creating a blog on local veterans, sharing stories that could be read by families and friends.
Jeffrey's name brings a smile to the face of everyone who hears it, and while he has left us far too soon, he leaves us comfort in countless stories, fond smiles, happy memories, and a compassion that will be felt far beyond years that can be counted.
He is survived by his wife, Meaghan Burke Proctor, and their son, Tucker, of East Bridgewater; his parents, Wayne and Paula Fitch Proctor of Franklin; his brother, Adam Fitch Proctor and his sister-in-law, Sarah Antin Proctor of Franklin; his beloved cousins, Beth Sitterly of Brookfield and Brent Sitterly of Colchester, VT; his in-laws, Donald and Marsha Burke of Dighton and all of the Burke family, and a bevy of nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
A wake will be held at the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 441 South Main St., (rt28) West Bridgewater on Sunday, July 25th from 1;00-5;00pm. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Monday, July 26th at 11:00am. A Celebration of Jeffrey's life will be celebrated at Barrett's Ale House, 674 West Center Street, West Bridgewater from 12:00-3:00PM.
