Holland-Madden was the first born of the late Walter H. Holland Sr. and Olga A. (Pogue) Holland on February 11, 1937. She was a go getter, a problem solver, a diplomat, a tenacious adversary, a loyal confidant, a great listener, a keeper of secrets, a true and trusted friend. Joan was a founding member of some organizations and an active in many others in her 85 years of life. She was a founding member of the Oldies but Goodies Club, Salisbury Park Reunion Committee , and her first was the Afro Conservatives who hosted Cotillion Balls at the Walkover Club in 1977; and an Economic Development group in the 1980's. And most recently the Singing Seniors through the Council of Aging and the Marvin Hagler scholarship committee. Her commitment to her community inspired her to serve as secretary of the Brockton branch of the NAACP, tutor students via Leaps & Literacy program for Brockton Public Schools. She has formed and been a part of Crime Watch committees within her neighborhoods. Joan was active in many churches in Brockton over the years such as Lincoln Congregational, Morning Star in Mattapan, Mt. Moriah, Lighthouse of Faith in Christ Jesus, and Messiah Baptist church. Back in the day she was a loyal member of the ELKs of the IBPOE of the World, Cambridge Chapter. As mentioned, Joan was involved actively in numerous organizations simultaneously from her mid 20's until her passing at 85 years old.
