Obituary

John V. Loftus of East Bridgewater passed away unexpectedly on February 29th 2024 at Brigham and Women's hospital surrounded by his family.

Born on June 29th 1945 in Boston, the youngest son of the late Martin Loftus and Delia (Naughton) from Galway, Ireland. He was a proud native of Dorchester. He spent his time growing up playing many recreational sports with the other neighbors in Dorchester and South Boston, "Southie". He was known as "the baby" of the family as he was the youngest of the six siblings with whom he enjoyed spending time.

In 1967, he married the love of his life Carole Tivnan, and together they raised two children, Lisa and Brenda. John was a devoted husband and father. His family was the cornerstone of his life.

John worked at Brigham and Women's Hospital for over twenty years as the radiology department equipment manager. He also served in the Army National Guard for six years. A proud Irishman, he was a founding member of an Irish club, "Ireland's Own" that was created with his cousins and friends. He also owned and operated his own travel agency business with his wife, Carole. Him and Carole traveled to many places in their time together but their favorite place was Aruba. He was an incredible caregiver to Carole for many years leading up to her passing. Once she passed, he continued to travel to Aruba with their lifelong friend, Janice, better known as his BFF (Best Female Friend).

John was a proud father and grandfather. When John wasn't traveling, you could find him spending time with his family. He loved going to Southie to visit his granddaughter or going to watch his grandson play hockey at college or stopping in Salem to see his other grandson. He was known for his quick wit and classic "grandpa jokes". With the help of the gift of gab, he was an amazing story teller. He loved good conversation over a cup of afternoon tea. He was an avid movie watcher but he also enjoyed gardening, golfing and genealogy. He loved sports and was a Boston sports fan through and through. He even was in a fantasy football league with his grandchildren. He was a great cook but specialized in making his homemade chocolate pudding. He was famous for finding the best deals on items people didn't know they needed. He was a reliable handyman even though sometimes duct tape was his favorite tool. He had a kind heart and a comforting smile. You could always count on him for anything.

He is predeceased by his parents and his brothers Martin, Redmond, Thomas and sister Mary, and his beloved wife Carole. He leaves behind a legacy of love and many cherished memories with his daughters Lisa Smith and her husband, David, Brenda Lawler and her husband, Frank; his grandchildren Melissa, Trevor, and Dylan; and his sister, Barbara, and brother, Joe.

He was full of life and laughter. He truly touched everyone he met. He will be deeply missed.
