John Violanta Mendes, "Papai"

January 31, 1938 – October 28, 2024

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John Violanta Mendes, lovingly known as

"Papai," who left us on October 28, 2024, at the age of 86. He was born January 31, 1938 in

Cova de Joana, Brava, Cabo Verde. After relocating in 1969, he met many friends that became

family while working at Plymouth Rubber. Within a few short years, he and his wife purchased

their family home in Brockton. Soon after, he proudly became a citizen of the United States.

John now joins his beloved wife, Aucilia Mendes, and his late daughter Emelia Mendes in

eternal peace. He is survived by his siblings Louis Oliveria, Maria Smith, & Jania Oliveria; his

children: John G. Mendes, Fatima Pina, Linda Mendes, Joanne Mendes, and Anthony Mendes.

His memory lives on through his grandchildren, Johnny Mendes, Tyler Mendes,, Gabriella

Mendes, Jacklyn Xavier, Malik Riberio, Myles Riberio, Antonia Allen, Jazmine Glasgow, Nina

Powers, Anthony Mendes Jr., Anthony M. Rodiguez, Catia Pina Aires & Carla Pina Aires, — his

seven great-grandchildren and many nieces & nephews.

John found happiness in life's simple joys; being by the ocean, fishing, and the love of his family.

His hobbies included gardening, tending to his exotic animals, and winemaking. Family

gatherings were his favorite moments, where he would bring warmth, laughter, homemade wine,

and subtle humor. Playing the viola, ukulele, and guitar, John always enjoyed creating and

experiencing music, especially mornas. He will be missed deeply by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont Street, Brockton, on

Sunday, November 3, 2024 from 2-5 p.m. A memorial service will be held at St. Edith Stein

Church, 71 East Main Street, Brockton at 10:30 a.m. on Monday November 4, 2024. Interment to

follow at Calvary Cemetery, 163 North Cary Street, Brockton, MA. Relatives and friends are also

invited to join the family for a celebration of life afterward at St. Edith Stein Church.
