Obituary

John R. Shields, age 62, of Raynham, died on July 31, 2024 at South Shore Hospital following a brief illness. John was born and raised in Brockton, son of the late Robert and Roberta (Peluso) (Shields) Avitabile.

John was a graduate of Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School. For many years he worked in the construction industry and retired this past year from Stop & Shop Supermarket after 12 years. John will be missed dearly by his Stop & Shop co-workers.

A quiet man, John was devoted to caring for his mother. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and feeding the birds.

John was the brother of Colleen “Pokie” Cotter and her husband James of Raynham and the late Robert Shields. He was the uncle of Tyler Cotter and his wife Michelle of Stoughton and great uncle to their children Tommy and Teddy, uncle of Trevor Cotter and his wife Jenn of Raynham and great uncle to their children Max and Maisie, uncle of Trent Cotter and his husband Joaquin of Brooklyn and Colleen Bradford of Florida. He is also survived by many cousins.

Private family services will be held at a later date.
