John A. Skelly, 78 years, of Brockton, passed away peacefully on Saturday August 28, 2010 after a brief illness. For 53 years he was the husband of Joan M. (Callaghan) Skelly, and he was the son of the late John L. and Dorothy A. (Saxton) Skelly. John was a lifelong resident of Brockton and graduated from Brockton High School in 1950. He was a veteran of the Korean War where he served overseas with the Army. He had been employed by New England Telephone Company for over 30 years retiring from the Nynex Engineering Department. John found great enjoyment feeding and watching many species of birds in his backyard. He was a Verizon Pioneer Life member, a member of the American Legion Post 35 for 50 years and held a lifetime membership to the Sharon Fish and Game Club. Following his retirement he enjoyed spending the winter months in St. Augustine, FL
John is also survived by his son Peter J. Skelly and his wife Jean of Wareham; two grandchildren Justin and Courtney; a brother Philip Skelly and his wife Doris of Florida; a sister Karen Lipper and her husband James of Colorado and a cousin Frank Green of Centerville. He also leaves two nieces Lisa Barrett and her husband William and Amy Tackett and her husband Ken of Florida. He was the brother of the late Jean Skelly.
Funeral from the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Wednesday at 8am. Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 9am. Burial with Military Honors in Calvary Cemetery. Visiting Hours Tuesday 4-8pm. Donations may be made in John’s name to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place, 6th Fl, Brookline, MA 02445-9924, for online donations
