It is with much sadness that the family of John H. Sutton announces his unexpected passing on April 25th 2020, at the age of 77. Born on October 5th 1942, he was preceded in death by his mother Alice (Hilliker) Sutton, his brother Michael Sutton and his wife Jean (Rose) Sutton.
John was born in Buffalo, New York and raised in Angola, New York with his brother Michael and sister Judy. He attended Lake Shore High School in Angola and was the captain of the football team when a knee injury sidelined him and his goal of collegiate football.
He entered the Navy in September of 1961 and in January of 1962 was stationed on the USS Kretchmer (DER-329) as a machinist/engineer. While stationed on the Kretchmer, he received the Navy Expeditionary Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. Upon return home he was stationed in Newport, Rhode Island where he met Jean Rose. John and Jean were married on May 22, 1965 in Attleboro, MA. After discharge from the Navy, John and Jean lived in Massachusetts and in New York before settling in Taunton, MA. They had two children—their son Robert and their daughter Stephanie.
John worked for many years as both a machinist and oil deliverer, while putting himself through classes. He started at the Foxboro Company in 1980. He worked in integrated circuit testing as a computer test engineer. He worked at the company for 30 plus years, forging many lifelong friendships, before retiring in 2010.
John was very active in the churches he attended in his adult life—New England Baptist and Temple Baptist Church both in West Bridgewater. John was an usher, deacon, Sunday school teacher, senior activities leader and sound board technician for the churches audio needs.
As an Eagle Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow, John was active for many years as both a troop leader and camp counselor for Boy Scouts of America. John played hockey in a men's league and enjoyed watching professional games with his wife, often passionately showing their support for the Bruins. He continued his love for the game of football by helping to coach his son's youth football team in the town of West Bridgewater. John had not only a love for the game but a sharp eye and technical mind; he could often be found sitting in his favorite recliner, yelling at the refs about bad calls.
He had an interest in videography and helped produce local TV programs. John also enjoyed traveling with his wife and family and a good meal out at local restaurants. He enjoyed Westerns, action movies and loved Cheers and Seinfeld. In his later years, John enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren who spent many happy days with him and Jean at their home.
He was a kind-hearted, generous man who would befriend and help anyone in need. His positivity left lasting impressions on those who had the pleasure to meet and know him. He truly embodied the 12 principles of Scout law and upheld the three promises of the Scout oath—duty to God and country, duty to other people and duty to self.
John leaves behind his son Robert Sutton of West Bridgewater; his daughter Stephanie Furzland and her husband Matthew of Middleboro; his granddaughters Fiona and Leila and grandson Matthew, Jr; and his sister Judy Glatzhofer and her husband Ron of Angola, New York. John also leaves behind many other friends and family, both old and new.
