Tonis, 72, of South Weymouth, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 18, 2017 at the Samuel Marcus Nursing Home in Weymouth after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer. Born June 25, 1945 in Brockton, he was the son of the late J. William Billy Tonis and Ruth (Corayer) Tonis. John attended school in Brockton and Hanover where he was a 3-sport athlete and captain of the track team. He was a graduate of Brewster Academy and graduated from Bryan Stratton Business School and served proudly in the United States Navy from 1967-1971. John was a carefree individual who always had a smile and enjoyed his winters in Florida and long walks at D.W. Field Park. He was an avid sports fan who closely followed the Red Sox and Patriots, but his true love was the game of golf, which he played throughout his life. The family would like to thank the VA which cared for him throughout his battle, as well as the Elizabeth Catherine Rest Home of Weymouth and Hospice of Woburn who led him down his final path in life. John is survived by his brother, Kenneth Tonis and his wife Barbara of Bonita Springs, Florida. He was the brother of the late James Tonis.
