Joseph S. Bloomstein, 85, of Halifax and formerly of Brockton, passed away Sunday, September 21, 2014 at the Sachem Center for health and Rehabilitation in East Bridgewater. He was happily married to the late Marie R. (Stratoti) Bloomstein for 60 years.
Born June 24, 1929 in Brockton, he was the son of the late Abe Bloomstein and Anna (Feldman) Bloomstein. Raised in Brockton, he graduated from Brockton High School and the joined the United States Air Force which then became his career.
He served in Europe, Japan, Asia, Iceland and Greenland. His last assignment was as a Recruiter for the United States Air Force in Massachusetts. He was awarded The Top Recruiter in the U.S. given to him by the Secretary of Defense McNamara at a ceremony in Boston.
He retired as Master Sergeant of the United States Air Force working at the University of Massachusetts as Director of Materials and Distribution. He worked there for over 20 years where he received many achievement awards.
Joe was a great advocate for St. Casimirs Church and Our Lady of Sorrows Convent in Brockton as an influential fund raiser for many years. He enjoyed sports and reading.
He is survived by his sons, Barry L. Bloomstein and his wife Kathleen of Sharon and Augie J. Bloomstein and his fianc Licia Merritt of Pembroke; his grandchildren, Kaitlin, Emily, Augie, Jr., Shelly and Johnny; his brother, Morris Bloomstein of West Bridgewater; his sister-in-laws, Rena Dutra and her husband Robert of Bridgewater and Linda Waitekunas and her husband Dennis of FL; he is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Samuel and Leon Bloomstein.

Funeral from the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (Rt123) Brockton on Thursday, September 25th at 8:00AM thence to St. Edith Stein/St. Edwards Parish, 71 East Main St., Brockton where a funeral mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul at 9:00AM. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Brockton. Calling hours in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4:00-8:00PM.
