Joseph M. Hanley, Jr., Age 98, of Brockton, MA, passed away unexpectedly while surrounded by his family, on December 3, 2024. Joseph "Joe" was born in Brockton to the late Joseph Murray Hanley and Marion (Shearing) Hanley and is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary "Marie" M. (Altieri) Hanley; his 3 daughters, Nancy Hanley of Brookline, Carol Hanley of Boston and her companion, Mike Donoghue of Apollo Beach, Florida, and Julie Turner and her husband, Mark Turner, of Kennebunkport, Maine; and his 2 grandsons, Joseph Turner and Robert "Bobby" Turner. He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen "Kathy" Coughlan and her husband Ronald "Ronnie" Coughlan and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was the brother of the late Mary Rose Giles, Geraldine "Chickie" Fortier, Patricia Mulligan, Ruth McNeill, Lois "Ollie" Conley and Dorothy, "Dottie" Liberator.
Joe graduated from Brockton High School in 1944 and enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps., attaining the rank of Staff Sargeant. He served proudly in WWII, stationed in Denver, Colorado and Okinawa and deployed to Saipan, Solomon Islands and Eniwetok, among other Pacific bases. Returning to Brockton in 1946, Joe worked for Columbia Electric Supply Company for the following 55 years as an admired colleague and mentor to many. Joe loved the game of golf. He began caddying at a young age and developed his passion and skills playing at DW Fields Park and then as a playing member of Thorney Lea Golf Club until the age of 93. He was also an avid Boston sports fan, especially of the Red Sox and Patriots. He and Marie loved traveling and visited many countries in Europe, Asia, South America and the Caribbean as well as many US states. Joe was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, known for his witty sense of humor, jokes, songs as well as little" ditties" acquired from his Irish heritage. He always generously lent a helping hand to anyone and was happiest when surrounded by his family and friends.
Calling Hours at the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (Rt.123) Brockton, will be Tuesday, December 10, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Funeral from the Funeral Home, on Wednesday, December 11 at 9:00 a.m., followed by a mass at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 439 West St., Brockton. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Brockton.
