Obituary

Joseph John MacDonald Joseph J. MacDonald, 78, died Saturday, June 6, 2015, surrounded by his family at Good Samaritan Medical Center following a brief illness. He leaves behind his beloved wife and high school sweetheart of 56 years, Priscilla (Kraham) MacDonald. He was a loving and devoted father to his children, Kerry (MacDonald) Sullivan; Shawn MacDonald and his wife Jacqueline; Kelly (MacDonald) Vaillancourt and her husband Peter; Allison MacDonald; and cherished his grandchildren; Ryan, Meaghan, and Courtney Sullivan; Jillian and Lindsey MacDonald; Devon and Brycen Vaillancourt. He also leaves behind his dear sister, Mary Anne (MacDonald) Best and her husband Francis T. Best of Portsmouth, RI and sisters-in-law, Barbara Kinsella of Newport and Janet Lewis of Florida as well as many nieces and nephews. Born and raised in Newport, Rhode Island, the beloved son of Joseph and Catherine (Campbell). He was a proud graduate of De La Salle Academy in Newport, class of 1954, and Massasoit Community College in Brockton, MA. He has been a resident of Brockton since 1968. He dedicated his life to the Boys and Girls Club of America. At 16 he became an original member of the Park Holm Boys Club in Newport. By the age of 23 he was a full-time employee and never looked back. He began his professional career at the Boys Club of Newport County in 1959. He served in a variety of positions including: Games Room Supervisor, Unit Director, and Assistant Executive Director. In 1964, he became the Executive Director of the Barre Boys Club of Barre, MA. In 1968, he joined the New England Regional Staff as an Assistant Regional Director and served in that capacity until 1978 when he assumed the Directorship of the Boston office of the Northeast Region. Joe is a certified Boys & Girls Club worker and a member of the Association of Boys and Girls Clubs Professionals. He was the recipient of the Association of Boys & Girls Clubs Professional Northeast Regional Contribution to the Profession award; the Yankee Chapter of the Association of Boys & Girls Clubs Professionals Associations Professional of the Year and Contribution to the Profession awards; the Boys and Girls Clubs of Americas Bronze Keystone and Service to Youth Awards; and the Association of Boys & Girls Club Professionals and the New England Commissions Distinguished Service Awards. His career spanned 43 years until his retirement in 2002. Joe had a passion for the outdoors and loved nothing more than spending time with his family around the pool. Pop happily attended every sporting event, recital, concert, and play his family was involved in and he was noticeably their number one fan. He was a favorite coach to many in Brockton whether it was little league, Brockton Youth Hockey, or the basketball church league, not to mention numerous neighborhood cookouts. He also enjoyed his time as a Religious Education Teacher at St. Margarets Parish and has been a faithful communicant of St. Margarets Parish and more recently Our Lady of Lourdes. An avid golfer and former caddy, he was a longtime member of the Brockton Country Club Gang Busters where he also spent time as a board member. Funeral Information Funeral from the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St.,(Rt.123) Brockton on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at 9:30AM thence to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 439 West St., Brockton where a funeral Mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul at 10:30AM. Interment will follow in Coweeset Cemetery, Pearl St., Brockton. Calling hours Wednesday from 4:00-8:00PM.
