Joseph F. Picchione, 80, of Bridgewater died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, October 30, 2023 at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He was the husband of Katherine M. (Thomas) Picchione.
Born in Brockton on January 17, 1943, he was the son of the late Joseph Picchione and Cora (Caparotta) Picchione.
He grew up on the Eastside of Brockton where, as a teen, you would find him selling newspapers after mass on the steps of St. Colman's Church.
Joe spent six years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, mustering out as a Sergeant.
Joe graduated from Brockton High School, class of 1961, and earned a degree in Criminal Justice. He worked as a union pipe fitter before joining the Brockton Police Department in 1968. Joe spent most of his police career working the midnight to 8am shift. He retired as a lieutenant after 32 years of service. In 1970, Joe was presented The John Zinkevicz Valor Award. After retirement from the police department, he worked 10 years at the Bridgewater Ice Arena.
Joe was a quiet man. Joe loved detailing his 2014 Lexus, and if his wife got lucky, he detailed hers too. Joe loved fishing, attending his grandchildren's sporting events, and travelling to Cape Cod where he spent many happy years at his daughter's summer home. He loved boating and family dinners as well as watching his grandson play hockey.
He met his wife Katherine (Kitty) Thomas 'driving the drag' on Main St. in Brockton. They recently celebrated 59 years of marriage on April 5, 2023.
Joe is survived by his wife Katherine, his beloved daughters Jill Picchione and his future son-in-law and friend David Murphy of Norton and Lea-Ann Melanson and her husband Steven of Bridgewater. His greatest joy was his 4 grandchildren whom affectionally called him 'Bampa'. He also lovingly referred to his grandchildren as his 'king and 3 princesses'. His four grandchildren; Matthew Harlow and his wife Kaleigh, Jacqueline Melanson, Jessica Pierce and her husband Mitchell and Jillian Melanson; his great grandchildren Isabelle and Siena Harlow and Parker Pierce; He leaves two sisters Joyce Potvin and her husband George and Carol O'Connell and her husband Kenneth as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Joseph is predeceased by his sister Lorraine Norvish and Anthony Picchione.
Visiting hours will be held in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 441 South Main St.,(Rt.28) West Bridgewater from 10:00AM to 1:00PM on Saturday, November 4th. A funeral service will be at 1:00PM. Interment will follow in Central Cemetery, East Bridgewater.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Disabled American Veterans Po Box 14301 Cincinnati, Ohio.
