Obituary

Joseph J. Powers, age 81, of Pembroke, died February 7, 2016 at the VA Medical Center, West Roxbury. Born and raised in Brockton, Joe was the son of the late Oliver J. and Alice E. (Stone) Powers. He was a graduate of Brockton High School, class of 1952, and Bridgewater State College. During Korea, he served with the Navy aboard the USS Irwin. An avid golfer, Joe was a member of the high school golf team which won the 1952 state title. In his youth, he had been a caddy at DW Field Golf Course, and was one of its youngest club champions. Prior to retiring and moving to Pembroke, Joe had been a history teacher at South Jr. High School for 14 years.
Joe was the brother of Margaret Mazzola of Barnstable, Theresa Bowden of Missouri, John Powers of Brockton, Daniel Powers of Wareham, Mary Mignault of Brockton, Charles Powers of Arkansas and the late Nancy Tyler. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton, Thursday 3-6pm. The funeral procession will gather at the funeral home Friday at 8am followed by a funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 9am. Burial in Calvary Cemetery.
